Subject: Fog lamp retro.... IP: Logged
Message: My 01' SLT QC didn't come with fog lamps. Can I buy a fog lamp kit from Dodge to retrofit my Dak, and if so, is the wiring harness on my truck going to have the pig tale & connector for them? I just bought this truck two weeks ago and a quick look under the bumper did not locate the connectors.
Has anyone installed the factory fog lamps?

Message: The factory plugs are usually visible up top if you have them. Shine a flashlight on the rad and look around. One may be tied up under the splash shield under the rad where the harness crosses over.
Dodge sells the kits or you can buy the switch and lamp assemblies, if you already have wiring. That's what I did. It looks factory installed. The kit comes with wiring and a switch that you mount on your dash and it look like crap. You need to put a relay in the PCM as well.

Message: Not PCM the power center or whatever Dodge calls it up by the battery. Forgive the brain fade.

Message: hmmm,
Thanks for the reply. Did these lamps come on with the headlite switch or did they have a separate switch that you mention. Is the switch a rotary, rocker, push/pull type? Where is it located on the dash? Is there a bezel that indicates the switch is for the fog lamps? Sorry about all the questions, just what to duplicate the factory set-up.

Message: The factoy switch for trucks with fog lights is just like the switch for trucks without fog lights except it has a detent where you pull it to put the fogs on. Does that make sense? You buy the headlight switch for a Dak with factory fogs and replace yours with it.
The switch in the kit is just a rocker switch and you have to drill a hole in your dash to the left of your steering wheel to mount it. The kit comes with a wiring harness that you run through the firewall and hook up to the power center. It has it's own fuse and relay.
If you want to make you fog installation look factory, first determine if you have the wiring up front. Most SLT's do, but double check. If you have the wiring you need to go to the Dodge store and get the headlight switch for a 01 SLT with fog lights (and swap it for the one in there now), the relay for the power center (all the locations are marked) and the fog lights.
If you want you can also use Pilots or Hella's or whatever you like, you'll just have to change the connector. Also, borrow or rent a 4" hole saw for the cutouts in the facia. It takes about 30 seconds with the hole saw and a few scrapes from a good sharp Xacto knife yo make some good smooth holes.

Message: IMHO
If looking factory is your goal than get the factory lights.
If you want better performance get some piaa's
I have replaced my factory bulbs with 55 watt to make them work a little better. The light source is ok but they are still a cheap light.
Most dak's that I have seen have cracked lenses including mine. When mine go out I will be replacing them with PIAA's
They have a modle that is very similar in shape and most could not tell them from stock.

Message: that of which hmmmm might be true on a new truck but on some of the older ones there is a seperate switch in the dash for the fog lights. but i see we are talkin about a '01 in this case.

Message: Which Piaa model did you use to replace the fogs? I'm currently in the middle of putting some factory fogs on mine (got them for a killer price and couldn't pass them up), but if they do crack in the future, it would be nice to know which ones to look for.
Also, how much does the factory headlamp/foglight switch run?
Thanks!!
