Subject: Transmission replacement? IP: Logged
Message: A friend of mine just had some transmission problems in his 2002 4.7 4x4 auto. The dealer said that he needed a new one and that he didn't recommend a rebuild. They want $5000 for the transmission and the labor.
Does anyone think that he should (a)have it rebuilt anyway (b)buy the stock replacement and have them put it in or (c)buy an aftermarket transmission and have that put in.
He looked and said he had some trouble finding an aftermarket transmission for his truck. So at very least if you know where you can get one that would be helpful. I am just getting opinions.
Thanks a lot,
2002 4.7 4x4 auto

Message: I doubt you will find an aftermarket transmission for his truck. These transmissions are controlled by the PCM and the computer is tied into everything now. Depending on what the diagnosis is with the original transmission (why did it fail?) I would look into either a rebuilt or a new one...

Message: not covered on a 2002? what happened? Also $5000 seems too high. shop around at different dealers and maybe try a few independant shops. Back in 1999 I needed to replace the A500 trans in my 88 v6er and I ended up getting a better deal buyin a crate A518 and having that installed than by rebuilding or replacing the A500, by about $300.
Look around man. It can't hurt especially if the truck is still drivable.

Message: My friend said that it stopped shifting. He took it to the shop and they said they were getting a lot of codes. When they checked the fluid it was fried. He supposedly had the fluid changed a while ago but he's not sure if the shop actually did it or not (now). He wasn't having problems with it before it suddenly stopped shifting. Personally I can't see the fluid being as fried as it was described to me after one incident.
I will get the mileage of the (supposed fluid change) and the mileage now tomorrow. Unfortunately I don't think I will be able to get specifics because I am not dealing with the shop and I wasn't with him when it happened. My friend, while not totally devoid of automotive knowledge, is not bursting with it either. I will find out what I can when I see him tomorrow and post again probably tomorrow evening for all those interested.
Thanks again for all of your help.

Message: I agree that $5k is nuts. My guess is that whomever changed the fluid probably put the wrong stuff back in. The new Mopars require Mopar ATF+4. Which supposedly is a highly friction modified fluid. I have seen instances where Dexron II or Dexron III was put in instead, and it smoked the torque convertor and eventually the transmission.

Message: His truck went in for the fluid change at 45,000 and the transmission quit at 65,000. I didn't relalize that he drove his truck almost one hundred miles a day.
That is a good point about the wrong transmission fluid though, I hadn't even thought of that. He told me that he is going to the junk yard this weekend to look at a 2002 4.7 transmission that (supposedly) has 2000 miles on it. If he can verify it he is going to buy it. They want $750 for it. I don't know about any installation arrangements.
Thanks again,
You guys rock.
