Subject: manual transmission IP: Logged
Message: Need help please. I am trying to change my transmission fluid over to synthetic, I have a 2003 dakota with a manual transmission. I am trying to find out the size of the drain plug. It is a hex on the bottom of the transmission, I measured it to about 3/4 in, but with my crappy tape measure I cannot measure it close enough. Oh yeah, know anywhere to buy the tool?
Thanks Dan

Message: Dan,
I bought mine at Sears. It's actually a 17mm hex key (like a giant allen wrench).

Message: Find a bolt head that will fit into the drain plug. Then clamp the bolt with a vise grip to loosen.

Message: Hey guys, thanks for the input, I actually found a micrometer and measured it, I think I am going for the bolt idea,, it is a lot cheaper, but thanks.

Message: Just be careful. With a tranny simply draining it does not get most of the fluid out, less than half actually they say. It needs flushed to be done right, especially if you're changing fluid types..

Message: I used a trick to remove the hex bolt without buying the 17mm hex socket and the cost was free. Check my site for the pics and info.
Justi, with the manual tranny all you do is drain it to get all the fluid out. It's not like an Automatic.

Message: I have a 2001 4.7L Dakota with 5 speed transmission. I have a couple of questions regarding the transmission. (1)I have a leak at the output shaft and have had a new seal put in about a month ago, but noticed that the leak is still there, what gives? (2) I am going to change the trans fluid and would like to go to a synthetic...what is recommended? (3) What size of hex key fits the fill and drain? Thanks Michael in the middle of Alaska. Oh yea, this is a 4X4.
