 Subject: check engine light???

99 dakota 3.9 w/88k miles. Is there anyway to find out what the check engine light means without hooking it up to a diagnostic machine. I know on some vehicles you can turn on and turn off your ignition a couple times and the light would flash so many times and that would signify what the problem was??? I am guessing this truck doesn't do this? Any info welcome

key on/off dont work for 98 99 take it to autozone they will scan it for free, because they want to sell you some parts ;-)

my check engine light came on once when i was gassing up with engine running. i went off by itself 2 days later.

lou are you trying to blow yourself up??? the reason your light came on is that the computer saw a lack of vacumm in the fuel tank, the vacumm is a way to keep fuel fumes from escaping into the atmosphere, when you replaced the gas cap on your truck the vacumm returned and the check engine light went out.

Watch those autozone code descriptions. When I used them they got the code number right but the description was not for my vehicle. I think there is a post on here that lists all the codes. Otherwise they are in the FSM. I bet the dealer's parts department will tell you what the code means also.

Thanks Mark, i think i will call the dealer and see what they say about that code. So where at on this website can you find out what engine codes are???
