My check engine light came on after offroading the other day. Once I got home I did the key on/off method and could only get a code12(the direct power input to the pcm was disconnected). From what I've researched on this site it doesnt seem like anything important, so I reset the computer by unplugging the negative terminal on the battery but after a little driving the light came back on, and again all I can get is code 12 so I'm a little confused. Also I checked the gas cap and it was tight so that can't be the problem. I have a 97 4x4 318. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

I managed to get another code by cycling the key on off after I get the 12. I got a code21 which has something to do with the oxygen sensor but I dont really understand what it means. And it mentions an upstream and downstream oxygen sensor, I only thought I had one on my truck. If anyone can clarify what the code means I would appreciate it.

Very interesting, I also have a 97 CC 4x4, 318. Last year I had the exact same problem. It was the 02 sensor. I replaced both, all was good. Good luck.
