so the hypertech did not have an option to change the tires size like it was supposed to do(thats why I bought it, their damn chart says it will do it for my model).
I guess I need to buy that speedo calibrator from superlift also??
I heard the 98's are different thatn the 97's somehow? the 98 will auto correct for gears/tire size?
is the 97 speedo mech or electronic?
can't I just buy a plastic gear?
33x12.50
4.56's
thanks.

Message: It's electronic. Auto-correcting tranny speedos? New one on me, but they really should be able to do that. The Superlift unit or the Abbott reprogrammer is what ya need. Sorry, the easy, inexpensive plastic gear solution went away when the '96's rolled in.

Message: I have the Superchips programmer and set my tire size to 33 and it was still not totally accurate but I also have the superlift calibrator so I am now right on Speedo wise.
The thing I like about the superlift calibrator is it has 2 settings so you can run 2 tire sizes and have accurate speedo readings all the time. To make sure your are calibrating accurate you need a GPS or another way to accuratly verify your speed.

Message: I'll have to get that superlift unit..
I just wondered why the power programmer didn't have the tire size come up when it was supposed to. I called hypertech and the guy was a complete idiot.
'did you buy it off ebay?'
no.
'huh, the chart says it supposed to'
yeah, no sh*t.

Message: In the 97s and older, you need to change the speedometer pinion gear in the tail end of the tranny for a change in gears OR rear tire size. While the speedometer gauge is electronical, the vehicle speed sensor derives its signal from a mechanical pinion gear.

Message: Speedo pinion gears can be bought from any Dodge dealer's parts dept. Give parts person your truck's year, tranny, new gear and/or tire size. They have them for the gears and tire sizes that were offered as options for your truck. If you've got an odd combo. then you'll need to figure out your effective gear ratio to know how many teeth you need in the pinion gear.

Message: ticats, hate to break it to ya, but these trannys went to electronic technology in 1996, hence the "RE" designation. The gear-driven speedo went away as well. From 1996-on, the speedo is run by a magnetic pickup in the overdrive housing. No Gears. It must be done with an electronic recalibration unit, the likes of which have already been mentioned in this thread.

Message: I have a 97 with the 44RE. The speedometer gauge gets its signals from the vehicle speed sensor which is in the tranny. The vss is attached to the end of a speedometer pinion gear. (simple explanation) I have had to replace my pinion gear when I went from the stock 3.55 gears to the 3.92 and then the current 4.56 (in which I had to calculate the no. of teeth requirement). I also had to replace the pinion gear when I went to 235/75 tires. Replacement was done by me and not by a garage.

Message: yup, your right. I pulled it out and I had a 31T.
a speedo shop said ~2MPH per tooth. So I'd need a 38 or 40T.

Message: misato ... you should be okay getting one. The max. number of teeth that is available for our trannies is 41. I calculated that I needed a 42 or 43, depending upon if I rounded up or down, with my 4.56 and tire size combo. Since rounding down will, in effect, make the speedo gauge show that you're going faster than you really are, there's no problem with being nailed by radar. I figure that my gauge shows 1.5 to 2 mph faster than I'm actually moving.

Message: Okay, obviously you guys know what you're pulling out of your trannies, so if it's gears you got, it's gears ya got! I am a bit confused as to just what they were doing. I dunno, maybe they were phased out of the 44's a little later?

Misato, whatever speedo shop you talked to isn't worth their salt. You can't talk about pure MPH when recalibrating, you need to talk about percentages. One tooth might make a difference of 2MPH at one speed and 10MPH at another.
