Subject: Front Wheel Bearings...AGAIN!!!
IP: Logged

Message:
Hi guys, I read the other posts about front wheel bearings and fouind that some of you were having problems. Do you have repeated bearing problems?
Just before Christmas I put new front hub/wheel bearings on my '98 Dak 2wd. I got them at NAPA for $125 each. Auto Zone's computer told them that my truck takes inners and outers. It doesn't and I found this out the hard way.
I got the new hubs on and within a week they were humming and vibrating. Almost a month later the left one was toast with grease spewing out.
I went to NAPA for another set with the understanding that I would return the others for a refund and to find out what went wrong. They called the dealer and said that the big 35mm locknut takes 185lbs with a torque wrench. So that's how the garage put them on this time instead of with an impact wrench. Before putting the wheel on, I felt the hub for play. It has play alright. I can make noise with them that would echo in the garage by moving them in and out fast! NOW what do I do?
The 35mm nut says DO NOT RE-USE
I would like to find just the bearings because I kept my old hubs.
The old ones were Timkin JRM4249A and the new one going in was an NTN. The other new one was JRM4249.
The other ones that just went in were NTN's.
What the hell is going wrong here? It just doesn't seem to tighten. Everything looks good, just doesn't feel good and I could hear the humming on my way home from the garage.
The dealer told me that people have this problem when they get parts from NAPA or other places but when they get parts from them that is the last they hear of them and the problem is settled. Dealer wants $175 for a hub assembly and $200-300 to install them. Screw that. This just does not seem that difficult to go wrong.
I also was told that NAPA stands for:
Need
Another
Part
A$$hole

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
BMan

Check your tires, a bad tire or tires will sound alot like a bad wheel bearing.

It's not the tires. It's the bearings. Remember the left one spewed grease. Both are loose before installing the wheels.

i think you'll find that you can't get the old bearings pressed out of the hubs. i found a source for the bearings on the web for ~$50 ea. but i was unable to get the bearings removed from the hub. i suspect they we're fused from heat cycling and corrosion. mine was 7 years old w/ 80K miles when i tried to press it out. i had no choice but to buy new ones from the dealer at an exhorbitant cost. none of the local parts stores where i live would sell these assemlies. i could only get them from the dealer.

also, the retaining nut is a nylon lock-nut. its intended to lock by cutting a thread when the nut is installed the 1st time. if you try to re-use it you aren't guaranteed to get the locking action of the nylon. i recommend that you buy new ones every time you replace a hub. i also had to but these at the dealer when i bought the hub assembly.

i'm still waiting for the bearing i didn't replace to fail. i expect it will be soon.

Well, I found the trouble. NAPA bearings are loose. Dealer ones are tight, PERIOD! And that's checking them on the bench.
But i'm still not paying $600 to have them done. I bought new ones from the dealer and will install them myself.
Go MOPAR in this case, even for the extra $50 a piece.

I am having the same problem. Using SKF brg/hub assemblies, I have replaced both sides twice in the last year. Had a 4 wheel alignment done...tech said nothing unordinary. No brake drag. I would think that SKF would be OE supplier or at least a top line replacement...am I missing something? Did the dealer brg. really make a difference?

SKF brgs are part of a recall for the problem you're having Brian check this link http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/recalls/recallresults.cfm?start=1&SearchType=QuickSearch&rcl_ID=08E064000&summary=true&PrintVersion=NO

IF IT DOESN'T SHOW UP look at the site www.recalls.gov and scroll down in the motor vechicle section look for SKF in the first line

partsmanager...I too stumbled across that as I spent 3hrs this afternoon scouring for info from other owners. Only the SKF number I have been sold is BR930207. The number in this recall BR930631 which seems to apply to the 2wd only. Perhaps can you clarify for me...would there be a difference in US vs. Canadian part nunbers?
Thanks for your help
Brian

No difference in Canadian part numbers as most OEM parts are made there anyway. even though then only specify 2wd in the recall I'd suspect the 4wd brgs too have problems since you have the almost exact condition there just havent been enough complaints yet on 4wd to justify a recall. I would look for a deal on a factory hub&brg and not take a chance on hub seperation on the road

Do you have good ball joints and tie rods? Make sure the rest of your front end components are all tight...otherwise no, there should be no reason.

If you need them again, i have at 01 durango i am parting out which to my understanding has newer wheel bearings, i'd sell you the whole spindle assembly for $40 each. (this includes the hub and spindle)

Wheel bearing woes plague Dakota owners and I
think I know why. The lower cost units are using
ball bearings and not tapered roller bearings.
Putting 185 ft lbs of torgue on ball bearings is
going to result in rapid failure. Tapered roller
bearings on the other hand are designed to take
that kind of force. Dealer replacements are roller
bearings. They cost more but they don't
disintegrate with 185 ft lbs on them. Timken
bearings are also roller bearings but they also
cost more. Spend the extra money or consider less
torque on the roller bearings. I am going with
Timkens because I don't know how much less force
to use. In any case use fresh spindle nuts.

In my previous post I said use less torque on the
roller bearings but I meant to say ball bearings.
Most of you have already caught my error, but just
to make sure, I have posted this correction.
