Subject: I think my 4.7 Quad Cab is defective
IP: Logged

Message:
I went from a 4-banger stickshift regular cab ranger averaging 25 and now my mileage dropped 8-10 mpg. I can't believe this! The dealership sold me a lemon! Why in the heck is a 4600 pound V8 4x4 crew cab truck getting such crappy mileage? Why wasn't I told about this?
The sticker says 14/17, I demand to get 14.00 mpg in the city and exactly 17.00 on the highway regardless of how I personally drive the truck. Shoudln't matter if I drive like a Knight Rider wannabe. I should still get the window sticker's numbers.
Not 13.98, not 16.99. If Im even 1/10th below the window sticker number my truck must need to be 'fixed' somehow. NEver mind the small print, I didn't have my glasses on when I looked at the sticker so the small print should be considered null and void.

First Im gonna waste money on a bunch of 'made for TV only' gimmicks and just get more pissed off cause they won't do anything. Then Im gonna come to a message board somewhere and bitch because I forgot to include increased gas costs in my budget before I went out and bought a truck.

Then on Monday Im going back to the dealer and demand they fiddle around pointlessly with the engine computer for 3 hours straight and then hand me a warranty invoice with some bs mumbo jumbo on it that they didn't really do just to set my mind at ease.

Dude, 8-10 MPG, your getting good mileage. My 181 ci 4 cyl only gets about 6-7 MGP and it tops out at 40 MPH, but that's on the water throwing a pretty wake.

My new DAK has it's pros and cons, but, overall I'll take the DAK. But!!!! On a dollar for dollar basis, the Ranger is a way better value than the DAK .. kinda hard tho .. pretty much apples and oranges. All in what ur lookin for.

Yeah accepting it for what it was, my little Ranger was an excellent vehicle for my needs. And one thing I can say about it that I can't quite say about my Dakota yet... at 100 thousand miles when my mechanic checked out the front end he said everything in that suspension was tight as new.

My '91 Ranger 4-banger AT was only getting 10 MPG when I junked it last fall for the Dak. My Dak had 7800 mi then and 14K now, and the MPG has gone up from mid 14's to mid 17's. I suspect the Dak's computer is a slow learner.

I'm sorry but a 4.7 QC 4x4 V8 *should* get terrible gas mileage. For your Ranger, if it had a 4 or 6 cylinder the new truck has nearly twice the capability of your Ranger as far as torque is concerned... You should try towing something very large up a steep hill w/ your V8 and then trying to do the same with your stick... I almost guarantee you will see results, but fast.

I haven't really figured out how many miles I get per gallon, but I'd imagine it's not the greatest... I'll write it down somewhere and get my truck near E sometime when it warms up and see, I guess... I do know I have the extra capacity tank so it would take nearly 30 bucks to fill it completely from near E... I get about a four hour trip off a completely full tank on a 70 - 72 mph click...

Eddy, did you make sure you bought the full-time four-wheel drive with automatic transmission on your Dakota? The extra heighth of 4WD increases frontal area. Tire and handling package with bigger rims and tires increases the inertia of the tires/rims and the engine has to handle that. Ditto on the full-time 4WD components always spinning and the added resistance of the CV joints in the front end.

My 2WD, manual transmission, 4.7L, V-8, QUAD CAB gets 19 city and 23 highway... And that's with the big rims and tires of the tire and handling package.

You can knock off a quick 2MPG when using gasoline with MTBE in it.

If the Dakota is new, it will get better mileage after break-in. Mine was only getting 16MPG when brand new.

I had a Mazda MPV minivan with 3.0L V-6, auto trans and 4WD... Want to talk about gas mileage sucking? It was broke in and got 16MPG city and 16MPG highway! I only used the 4WD on it twice in the 5 years I owned it.

I am just guessing, but I'll bet a Geo Metro got better gas mileage than your Ford Ranger, but you didn't bad mouth your Ford Ranger because of it.

Just my $0.02...

Trade the Dakota in on a new Ford Ranger if you're that unhappy.

Dave

Just as a clarification ... the AWD (full-time 4wd) doesn't decrease gas milage. All the drivetrain parts are turning anyway because of the fact that the DAKs don't have lock in/out hubs -- the 4wd is only actuated in the transfer case on the part-time -- not anywhere in the axles.

And as far as the Ranger vs. DAK ... no comparison. I loved both of them for completely different reasons (none of which I'll go into here, for obvious reasons). And I also loved my MX6, SuperBeetle, Toyota Truck, Monte Carlo, et cetera .. all for vastly different reasons. No need to compare all of them. If I like something that much about one vehicle ... I'll buy it. Question is ... would I buy it again??? ... Mr. Daimler ... are you listening??? ... Somehow I doubt it. :oP

Agreed, I loved my Ranger for its simplicity but the Dakota Quad is in a completely different class.

Dakotas get similar MPG as other trucks-from cars.com
Chevy Silverado 4.3 V6 -14/18 mpg
Chevy Silverado 5.3 V8 13/17
Chevy S-10 4.3 15/19
Dakota 3.9 14/17
Dakota 4.7 14/18
ford F-150 4.2 15/19
Ford F-150 4.6 15/19
ford F-150 5.4 14/18
Ford Ranger 4.0 15/19
Ford Ranger 3.0 16/20
Dodge Ram 4.7 14/17

These are EPA ratings for 4x4 automatics. They all look pretty close to each other to me. These are based on normal driving. Flooring it will lower mpg. Any time you are idling you get 0 mpg
