Subject: odometer/speedometer ticking

i have a 92 dak reg cab longbed 318 mag , automatic tranny. 124,500 miles


my question is i replace my speedometer cable a couple of months because it was ticking. well it still ticks, but now ive noticed that when its ticking the odometer and tripometer doesnt work. But it doesnt always tick all the time. does anybody know why its doing this.

I don't know the reason why your speedometer/odometer isn't working (probably slipping) , but I'd be happy that you are keeping a low milage Dakota...

Well, the ethical thing is to get it fixed... but I know it would be pretty far down on my list of things to fix.

my 92 did the same thing, dont worry the noise stops itself, but then the speedo doesn't work either.

it just bothers the heck out of me. the noise is enough to drive ya crazy. but i was thinking it maybe the gage cluster. o well not likes it undriveable. thanks anyway guys.

It needs greasing. Pull the speedometer cable and put powdered graphite on the cable and put in back in it's sheath and see if that stops it. If it doesn't, it's your speedometer head which needs rebuilding or replacing.
