Subject: Shroud Below Oil Filter? (4.7)
IP: Logged

Message:
I was wondering if anyone knew what size tap I should use for the holes around the plastic shroud below the oil filter. I would like to tap each hole so I can bolt and unbolt the cover. This way I can take it off and replace it each time I change the oil. I haven't pulled the cover off yet incase I don't have the right size tap. Any help would be appreciated

Thanks,
Chris

Chris,
it is all plastic. The shroud is held on by plastic panel poppers that expand into holes in the bumper cover.
You could easily take one out and go to the hardware store and match the size. You will need to use nuts on the back of the bolts. Tapping the plastic would not work out to well.
I have been running my dak for over a year without that shroud in place. I offroad and drive on dirt and mud more that most I am sure.
I would recomend taking it off and leaving it off.
But I do understand if you want to keep it in place. I would recomend you put a lag bolt in the hole and star washer to hold in place. Put the shrould on and secure with a wing nut. That would at least offer you some quick way of dropping it and putting it back in place. other wise you are going to sick of starting a nut and bolt every time you put it back.
Good luck.

I wasn't planning on tapping the plastic, I am planning on tapping the frame where the plastic panel connectors mount. This way I have just a few bolts to remove to remove the entire panel. I have bolts and taps just wanted to make sure I have the right one, incase it should be fine thread instead of course and vise versa.

Thanks for the info though

Chris

Go to your local hardware store and ask for something called a "well nut". These are rubber inserts with a nut embedded in one end and a rubber flange on the other. They slip right in the existing holes for the push plugs. Use a stainless screw and washer with them. When tightened, they expand within the hole and hold tight. I used these on my Dakota.
