Subject: P0442 code - Thanks IP: Logged
Message: My engine light came on and I had Autozone check and reset it 2 or 3 times. Each person there that checked it got the same code but each told me a different problem that would cause the code. I was going to take it to the dealer or another mechanic to have it checked but anytime I was able to go they were always closed or booked up. I found this list and found out how to get the code myself on the odometer. did a search for P0442 and decided to change the gas cap after reading all the different posts on this subject. It has been a week and a half and the light has not come back on. I just wanted to say thanks to all on this list. I am sure that if I had taken it to the dealer or any other mechanic it would have cost me more than the $10 I paid for the new gas cap.

Message: Well, I reset the code and checked the gas cap. Could not find anything wrong so I put it back on, making sure to only tighten it one click. After three months it still has not come back on.

Message: It seems that the p0442 code turns into a p0455 code. I recently had a p0455 code and I did reset my computer twice checking to gas cap both times, but it would not go away. I took my truck to the dealer and they found that my fuel pump had become loose causing the large leak. The repair involved them dropping the fuel tank,
which was just filled. to get access to the fuel pump. My dak is an 02 quad 4.7 w/AT.

Message: an easier fix and more common problem to the P0442 turning into P0455 is just a split hose to the evaporative canister(i think thats what they call it) located on the frame rail, drivers side.
P0442 is a small leak,if it turns into p0455(gross leak)then you have a worse problem than a gas cap.my dealer fixed it in like 15min and didnt charge me anything.he said its a very common problem with daks.
