Message: A local cop told me that late model Chrysler door locks are pathetic. He said theives just stick a screwdriver in the key slot and turn - basically same thing for ignition cylinder (he said they use something like cuticle scissors). He knows cause he said alot of joy-riders take Daks in our area. The good news is that a smart theif won't bother with your windows.
If you live in the city make sure you have at least 2-3 security devices (kill switch, fuel shutoff, AutoLok, Club, etc.) Alarms aren't much good of course. If you have a hard tonneau and tailgate lock, leave your valuables (if you must) in the back. Forget about securing anything in the cab, you might as well leave it sitting on the hood.

Message: A fast food sack with some empty cups and burger wrappers makes a great vehicle safe. Of course you'll need to add a half-eaten order of fries in the bag for that really authentic touch.

Message: Well, as for har to get into,
Seemingly not,
My Dak has been flawlessly broken in to with no damage to anything 3 times last year, (I work at a city highschool.. talk about being a target..)
so, yea, they can be broken into easily. the lock rod on the '98's atleast, Ate straight up and down with a bit of a bend to the front of the vehicle, easy to hook pretty much anything onto.
Had to solve the issue with a security system. Remote paging is definatly better then just a noise maker..

Message: Nope. Dakotas are POS when it comes to security. Don't feel bad though, the Tacomas are just as bad as we, maybe worse...
In the Northwest and in Canada, the Dakota is about the top stolen vehicle. In my area, in particular, 4x4 Quads top the list at number one. 4x4 CCs are about 5th.
Straight pipe your vehicle, no one likes to risk stealing loud ass vehicles..

Message: Daks are way down the list. The Hyundai Tiburon is the #1 stolen vehicle north of the border. It's like this:
1) Hyundai Tiburon (two door)
2) Acura Integra (two door)
3) Honda Civic Si (two door)
4) Hyundai Accent (two door)
5) Volkswagen Golf GTI (two door)
6) Honda Civic (two door)
7) Honda Prelude (two door)
8) Dodge Dakota (four-wheel drive)
9) Dodge Dakota (two-wheel drive)
10) Dodge Ram 1500 (four-wheel drive)
A determined thief will get your vehicle no matter what you do. Unless you booby trap it with a few Claymores, don't count on it always being where you left it.

Absolutely true. But if you put enough obstacles in his way he will move on to an easier target.
My Club (the kind with 4 hooks on it) -
Mostly a visual deterrent.
Time required to defeat: about 30 seconds
My AutoLok (brake pedal locking device) -
Time required to defeat (without power tools): 5-10 minutes?
My kill switch (disables ground to starter relay)
Time required to defeat: ?
At this point the experienced thief is going to pop the hood to look for wiring mods and find none (under the hood at least). If it was a Toyota Camry he might invest more time in it, but I suspect he'll just move on to another truck.
Still to come: hidden fuel line shutoff valve

Message: I have thought of the ultimate booby trap but have never done it. I wonder about the legal technicalities. You know, a burgler getting HURT while stealing your sh*t and then YOU getting sued??!!!!
Amyway.
I could build a booby trap using a small charged tank of something like R22 refridgerant (something with chlorine in it) and a electric selenoid to despense it on demand. If a theif were to get in your ride, a selenoid would open allowing the gas to emit (a small small quanity would work). This gas could pass along a glow coil of some sort. As long as it is hot enough to burn the gas, the chlorine will turn into MUSTARD GAS (Phosgene Gas). This is the same sh*t the Germans (and Terrorists use) to kill people. Of course you have to be TRAPPED in the poisonous gas for several minutes to die, but anyone who has taken a whiff of this like any A/C tech has during welding on a used system, will know that your lungs stop breathing the first whiff you get and then you have to get up and leave the area.
This gas in your vehicle would prevent ANY theif without a high tech breathing mask from stealing anything, your stereo, etc, and he would NEVER be able to drive the vehicle.
The beauty of it is he wouldn't know what was going on and freak out.
After it is used all you would have to do is vent the truck for a while and make sure the device is disabled when you drive it yourself.
If and when I do make such a thing, I'll post it here and on my site. I've brain stormed this idea for years now. I still need to know what kind of warnings you would have to post on your ride to protect yourself from getting sued.
One more reason to NOT turn a theif in if you catch him. You need to drive 100 miles in the desert and drop them off. BAREFOOT.
That may give them a while to reconsider their ways.

Message: I like the idea of the kalashnikov mag and ammo(ak-47 for the non-rednecks among us) on the front seat. Unfortunately Wisconsin's assault rifle ban stops that. No clips over 12 rounds I believe. also illegal to have more than a few hundred rounds in your posession. But we can carry concealed firearms now.
