Message: Gen II Geoff-
jay referred to his "ak" - he never said whether or not it was a 47 - could be a 105, a 74M, etc. So by your definition a "non-redneck" is someone who jumps to ill-informed conclusions based on limited knowledge. Just wanted to get that straight.

Luckly mine wasnt touched as far as i can tell thank god.
Only thing i had of value in there was a 75 round clip for my ak and 1000 rounds of ammo."
That story means your friends are the ones that did it.

Message: As long as you reside in the Peoples' Republic of Wisconsin, it should be of concern to you. I hope it passes but I'm not counting on it. I'm also wishing my glove compartment had a lock on it and the flip-down armrest on my bench seat had the inner compartment (that would have been a great place to store a gun!).
And here's a good reason to have one in your vehicle with you.

Message: I'm aware that kalashnikov manufactures a variety of firearms, but from my standpoint the ak-47 is by far their best and most widely known rifle. We've all heard the story about how some dude pulled one out of the mud that was rusted shut, kicked the bolt and it fired.
I also want it to pass, but I don't want to get into a debate over gun control laws as I seem to have allready upset some people.

Message: I live in an apartment building with poor security for the under ground parking lot. Cars down there get hit alot. They tried twice to get into my dakota but never did. Each time resulting in about $700 damage to the door and the door handle. I read some where that the 02 and up trucks have some kind of a door gaurd behind the handle. I dont know if this is true but both times they have not been able to get in to my truck. I know that you can buy those thing some where.
My idea know is to see if the door handle from a quad cab back door will work on the door of my truck. There are no key slot on them. Just use the keyless entry wich is all I use anyway. If the theif see no key slot he may not know how to get in and move on to the next one.

Message: Having 2 remotes like I do would rule that out. What are the chances of both going dead at the same time. And in the rare chance that it does happen I have a master lock out kit in my tool box. I can get in to allmost anything.
So yes I have thought about that.

Message: In 2.75 years of having my Dakota, I have never used the key to gain access, just the remote. And the one time the batteries (plural, there's 2 of them) went dead I had plenty of warning. The remote stopped opening the doors from any more than 10' away.
I think BrianY 02 R/T is on to an excellent idea. But then they can always break the window.
My neighbor has his F350 stolen and the theives used a tow truck or flat bed. All he was left with was a bunch of scrape marks in his driveway. If somebody wants it bad enough, they'll get it.

Message: At least some one thinks its a good idea. Thanks Hobson. Yeah they can just break a window or steal it with a tow truck. My point for the hidden locks is that every time they try to get in that way they do lots of damage. Not just to the handle but to the paint and door skin. Windows are easy to replace. Most young punks that do b&e`s on cars are trying to be as quiet as possible. Breaking glass wakes people up.
Getting back to the dead battery thing and not being able to get into your own truck, I have seen this done on alot of hot rods that have no door handles at all. They usually hook up some kind of a switch under the bumper or in a wheel well where they can open the doors incase that happens. Some will even work off a 9 volt battery just incase the car battery is dead.
Now having said that dose anyone know if the door handle from the back door will fit the front?

Message: Brian,
I just took a look at the tutorial on painting the door handles.
rear http://www.dodgedakota.net/articles/doorhandles/index2.htm
front http://www.dodgedakota.net/articles/doorhandles/index3.htm
They look similar but there are minor differences which could present chanlenges.
I have a quad cab but dont have time to yank my door handles right now.
It is hard to tell from this photo but the rear looks a little smaller also.
Give it a shot and if it works the document your work for the rest of us.

Message: I happened into a good way to keep thieves out of your Dakota. After your door lock actuator goes out (it will!) and starts screaming like a cat, put in the new one but accidentally forget to connect one of the rods. I did this and the outside door handle does not work if the door is locked or unlocked. Even if the lock is popped up the only way to open the door is with the inside handle. It was frustrating for me and I own the truck, but the thief would probably just break out the window in that case. If somebody wants into your rig or wants your rig, they will figure out a way. Just keep your insurance policy up to date!!
