Message: 04 Quad cab 4.7/3.55/4x4 sport plus with 5 speed automatic.
Bought partly cause I was tired of having to keep the pedal to the floor just so my Ranger wouldn't get rear ended merging on the highway. 2500 miles, haven't checked mileage yet, but don't care that much. I know on this tank I topped it off so Ill probably be able to get a good idea of consumption with 60% highway/40% city when I go to fill up around the end of the week. Gets about the same range as my 4-banger regular cab stickshift Ranger got, but with maybe 10-15 bucks more per fillip, which is absolutely fine by me. 60 bucks more per month is a bargain when I consider the grin this truck puts on my face when I floor it.
As for EPA estimates... it's pretty silly to think you'll match them on right on the nose. It's not a claim Dodge is making, its a claim the EPA is making. They do it by putting the truck on a treadmill in a very controlled environment and simulating various traffic conditions with a tube stuck to the tail pipe. There's no way in hell laboratory tests could ever possible account for all the possible variables that exist when you actually drive the truck out on the road. They can't account for your driving habits, how many hills are near your house, the exact angle at which you put the pedal every single time you accelerate from a light, the weather in your neck of the woods, or exactly what options and accessories are on your exact truck. Hence if youll look closely youll see theyre not promising you particular mileage, but more along the liens of "Actualy mileage will vary with opions, driving conditions and habits, and vehicle conditions. But results from the EPA indicate it will get anywhere between 11 and 17mpg in the city and 15 and 21 on the highway." So the mileage figures that most of you reporting that have you all so worried are actually normal and well within range, and your dealerships are probably just humoring you because they don't want to upset a paying customer by saying "What the hell did you expect, if you want gas mileage you should have got a Civic".

Message: If people are concerned about gas mileage they shouldn't buy the Dakota rather something else thay can afford to drive. The gas mileage topic is really getting stale.

Message: All this crap I keep hearing about milage is bull$hit. Talk about a bunch of whiny schoolgirls. I remember a little saying when I asked my grandpa how bad of milage his motorhome got, he replied " If you have to ask you can't afford it".
Its a V8 for christ sake if you want to bitch sell it and get a honda.

Message: Just checked for the first time. Dead of Winter, some tire spin in the snow, about 60city/40 highway.
Occasional wide open throttle on the highway, cruising normally at 75 or above.
11.92 total. Oh well, suits me just fine. If it gets better, great. If not, well Im still only filling up as frequently as my 4 cylinder stickshift regular cab Ranger, but for maybe 10-12 bucks more per tank. To me, that extra 12 bucks per tank is worth every penny.

Message: You got that right!
I'm happy to spend an extra $15 a week for a truck that runs good and can push the little import sh*t out of the way (or run over) if I have to!

Message: My 01 quad gets great mileage (13 to 15) less when towing. My 88 Dak 3.9 gets about the same milage with 1/2 the power. The 01 is faster than my suburban and gets way better gas mileage (4x4x454 burb)especially when I'm towing with it. I also own a pair of classic chevelle muscle cars and neither gets anywhere near as good a gas mileage as the Burb. If you need twenty miles to the gallon buy a riser or a motor scooter and get out of my way on the highway.

Message: my 01 xcab 4.7 auto gets a consistent 17.5 mpg 70/30 hwy/city with A/C on. The best I got was 19 mpg @ 70 mph w/o A/C.
My mpg went up 1.5 mpg when I switched to mobil 1 5w-30 from 10w-30. all else is stock @ 94,000 miles.
Sorry to hear of your gas mileage woes.

Message: My Dakota will blow 95% Of all Dakotas including RTs, and yet, will go at least 18 mpg. From time to time, i try to see how much i can really stretch this number. with concentration it rises to around 21 for around 1000 miles, then go back to real life. I fell very good knowing that i`m not polluting more than necessary and i like to be efficient, not necessarilly safe, but a precise driver. K&n FIPK, Fastman 68mm T body, Gibson headers and single 3 in cat back, 2nd stage jet chip, 180* thermostat, removed clutch fan and sun will install HO cams and intake manifold, along with 3923 plugs. I`m running with platinums for the last 10 K miles.
