Will putting a msd ignition system in a 99 3.9 cause it to ping more?? Will a hotter spark increase the risk of burning a valve or doing any other damage?? Or is it the plug its self that can cause pinging (i.e. insulator length). I got MSD wires a few weeks ago and they didn't give me any noticable change in power. I think i need more juice to push through the new wires. What should i buy?????

On the pinging part, no.

On the hotter spark, not unless you're using a "Race Only" Coil that puts out more than 65-70K volts. Then, and if your sparks plugs actually survive for than 1500 miles, you stand a chance of burning a piston.

What I would recommend is the MSD Ignition Box, MSD Super-Conductor Wires, Autolite 3923 plugs (gapped at .042 - .045"), and the Borg Warner Cap and Rotor (they have Brass Contacts).

One work of caution: After 7500 miles, you can kiss your cap and rotor goodbye. The MSD systems reduce the life of the cap and rotor. (Got pics on my site to prove that one as well.)

Oh christ.....if i have to change the cap and rotor that often, then i'd rather not go that route...Is there some kind of system thats a little milder and won't wear out parts as much?? And how much more power will i get out of the system you're talking about?? If its a noticable amount, then i might do it anyways

Any Multiple Spark Ignition system (or High Performance) will do that you a cap and rotor. It's part of the game...no way around it.

"Ya gotta pay to play"

It's not a big deal anyway...$20 for Plugs, Cap, and Rotor every 7500 miles.

Bernd, I got a brass cap/rotor and its been going for 30,000 miles with MSD 6A ignition and blaster 2 coil. I know it needs to be replaced but it still works ok. Cant wait to see it when I change it. probably once it gets warmer. I had Bosch plats that lasted 25k miles. Even though the cost is more for wear components, I got another 1 mpg plus noticed seat of the pants power increase

What are the part #'s on the brass borg-warner cap and rotor? I saw some on carparts.com and want to make sure it is the right one.

30K miles?!? Uhhh...you really should have changed them about 15K miles ago. Not to mention that MSD does not recommend any type of platinum plugs with the ignition system (neither does Jacobs or Crane).

Here's the link to the pictures:

Here's the info on the Cap and Rotor:

Borg Warner Distributor Cap (Brass): # C273
Borg Warner Distributor Rotor (Brass): # D223

What about just replacing the coil with a performance coil? What affect would that have if any?

Kris or Bernd,

I've been looking around carparts.com, but have not been able to find the Borg Warner cap and rotor. Can you provide a link to it?

Thanks,

David

Superfly: Those part numbers are for the V6. The Rotor part number is the same for the V6 and V8's though. The cap is (I believe) #C274.

On the link: http://www.speedtweaks.net

We finally received the pricing for the Borg Warner (V6/V8) and Accel (V8) Cap/Rotors:

$22.00 shipped for the Accel set (V8 only)
$17.50 shipped for the Borg Warner set
