Subject: Which battery is better? IP: Logged
Message: Which battery do you think would be better to get, the optima red top or yellow top?? Is it actually worth the extra money to buy the yellow top? thanks

Message: Depends on what you're going to do with it. The red top is a starting battery. Designed for routine vehicle use. The yellow top is a deep discharge battery. Designbed for heavy electrical use, like trolling motors, winches, campers, etc. Pick the one that matches your use.
There are two big advatnages to the OIptima battery. It's very sturdy, so chance of breakage during heavy off road use / vibration is minimal. It can also sit for a longtime without discharging. It can be mounted in any position; but unless you're building a custom truck that really doesn't matter. But it won't leak when off roading in severe off camber situations.
For my Cobra project, I chose an Optima red top for those two reasons. It sits on top of the passenger foot box, so I didn't want it to leak if a crash occurs. And the car my sit for a few weeks without being driven. But when I needed a new battery for my truck, I went to Autozone. It's half the price and works just as well for a daily driver.

Message: For a vehicle that you plan on keeping for a while I'd recommend AC Delco (not that anybody asked). Not cheap, but the only brand I've ever owned (and that's a LOT) that actually outlived it's warranty (6 years). The longest any other brand has ever lasted me is a little over 3 (and I always buy 6 or 7 year batteries).
Cheap batteries with 2 or 3 year free replacement are ok, but I prefer to spend a little more on a good unit that'll last awhile and be done with it. (let the flaming begin)

Message: guy came in for a tune up. we charged the sale price of $ 99. he said he wanted top of the line tune up. we tld him to come back tomarrow. we moved the car to a different parking spot and charged him $ 250. he felt good and we felt real good and had a good laugh.
i'll take a fools money.
by the way ac delco don't make batteries, you don't know who makes them this week.
Costco batteries are top of the line and they don't give you crap about the warranty.
You can't beat 3 year free replacement based on your word.
But hey i'll take a fools money and sell him any stick on label he wants.

Just my 2 cents worth but AC delco doesn't give you 2 to 3 year free 100% replacement. It's pro-rated with you losing 50% in year one and 80% or so by year two.

Message: gus- I've probably bought 10+ AC Delco batteries over the years as I've usually owned 3-4 vehicles at any given time for most of my adult life. I guess I just got lucky with all of them, they all lasted close to or exceeded the warranty - so I guess with each one I got the right week, huh?
Ya know, K-mart sells 2 year free replacement (no questions asked) batteries for $40 too. My sister's Jeep Cherokee has been through 3 of them in 3 years (nothing wrong with her electrical system).

Message: In Nov 04 issue of Consumer Reports there's an article about car batteries. In group 34 the top rated was Kirkland (Costco), then Diehard (North), NASCAR, Diehard (south), and Duralast (Autozone). AC Delco came in #8 of 10.
The article is well worth reading, giving you much of the information that you need to make an intelligent decision for the average vehicle. It lists things like average cost, warrenty, etc. Well worth reading before buying.

Message: They usually test more than one of each product. If you're not familier with CR, you should read the mag. It's usually pretty informative for the average guy. It's a good place to start doing your shopping. In each article, they usually try and explain what key features on and what to look for and watch out for. Then they explain the testing procedures. And finally, they rate the products. Is it the end all/be all of consumer reporting? Of course not. But they are pretty good.

Message: I used to subscribe to CR eons ago but dropped it cause of limited usefulness - I only found items of interest to me like maybe twice a year. I guess I could search for back issues when I need specific buying info but there are so many other sources of decent info (like this forum) on the internet that I just never bothered (sorry for going way off topic).

Message: I don't know who makes their batteries and I
really don't care but I've bought my last couple
of batteries from good old Wal-Mart. Easy people
to deal with if you have problems plus a fare
price.
I only buy from Wal-Mart. I'll buy tires there
but NEVER NEVER let them put the wheels back on.
They don't know how to use a air wrench. I remove
my own wheels and re-install using a torque wrench
set at 100 lbs.

At one time I was an AC Delco battery man but I just had one to start leaking on my truck again due to poor workmanship.
