Subject: Antifreeze Leaking IP: Logged
Message: Hi All,
I have a 94 dak with a 5.2.
The antifreeze levels in the overflow tank keep dropping on me and and I can't figure out where it is leaking. At first I thought it was the cap but area around it and the top of the rad is dry. The fan blades get wet, the rad gets wet, the shroud gets wet. The rad has been pressure tested and is fine. The hoses do not appear to be leaking at all. I haven't noticed any weeping at the water pump (the leak only happens when driving, not when idling). The belt looks to be dry. I'm stumped. Where could the antifreeze be leaking from so that it hits the fan? Could a lower rad hose be the case? (Dripping and then the air flow carries the anitfreeze up onto the fan?)

Message: pinhole in the radiator could do that. notice any hissing or steam right after you shut it off? bypass hose maybe. open the hood right after shutting down and look real good i would think you could see it then.

Message: ya you must have a pin hole leak in a rad hose or bypass hose firing out on the fan.some of them you can hardly see.

Message: My friend's '94 w/3.9 had the exact same problem. His hole turned out to be behind the top center part of the shroud. It was the end cap where meets alumn. fins area.
I know that you said you had it pressure checks, but try running the truck upto 3-4k rpm for 20-30 seconds or so. Then you might the problem. Sometimes you have to put a load on the truck, and the high rev would give a small simulation of it.
Just a suggeestion that I would try myself to find the hole.

Message: i have a '97 2wd w/ the 3.9. i had a similar problem. i found i was loosing a little coolant out of the overflow reservior constantly and a small puddle of water on the ground under the truck in the morning. the puddles were at the rear of the motor.
the problem was the thermostat housing however. the gasket between the manifold and the housing was developing a leak. it's a bear to get to on the '97 w/ AC. its a b#tch to find it visually. the housing is "down in a hole" at the front of the motor behind the alternator.
check it. if it blew out this could be it.
also check the "O-ring" at the input to the water pump from the fire wall on the driver's side. the O-ring is not visible. the heater hose connects to a metal "nipple" which is removable from the water pump itself. the O-ring is on the end of the nipple which is inserted into the water pump. the other end of the nipple is inserted into the heater hose from the fire wall on the driver's side. i'm told that these can fail over time and leak.
lastly check the heater by-pass hose. if you have AC its under the AC bracket and you can't see it w/out removing the AC & alternator and mounting brackets. it a short, 1 or 2" hose which goes from the top of the water pump to the front of the intake manifold. these should be replaced every 4 - 6 years. the rubber wears out due to heat & temperature cycling. its so short that it doesn't have enough materail for expansion/contraction cycles. not to mention that its trapped under the AC bracket.
hope this helps.
