Subject: What are common problems with 97-01? IP: Logged
Message: I'm really new to the dodge scene as my first cars were ford and chevy. I'm looking at getting a 97-01 Dakota and I'm wondering what are the most common problems with the V6/V8 2WD models? I'm basically in need of a vehicle asap and I'm wanting to see the normal for repair costs, etc.. because my old caprice was HORRIBLE for repair costs compared to other vehicles! Any advice or assistance on this is greatly appreciated! Also, what is the best year to look at for the Dakota? Are they easy to work on? how hard is it to get to different components (like plugs and wires, etc...)? Thanks all!

Message: Do a search on this site for front brakes and balljoints, these are the only common problems. These trucks have plenty of room to access things and easy to work on. I have 113K on my Dak and it had the mentioned problems. I would but it again since the repairs were easy and it's a real solid truck. DIY price for ball joint fix $130, brakes $80 on up.
If your buying one get the ball joints and front brakes inspected by a good front end shop, might give you some bargianing power and save you a repair bill.

Message: Agreed about the manual. I love the manuals when going over the mountains.. the autos never seem to hold back enough and the manual always gives a lot more control over your speed. I guess I'm just a control freak on that aspect! Thanks for all of the help ppl! Now my problem is finding a used one at a good price that is local to Chattanooga, TN. College tuition and new cars are very tough on the wallet for a struggling student! I just *REALLY* need something more dependable than my old chevy caprice. It's becoming more than a normal car payment trying to keep up with the repairs on this thing, and its no longer very dependable. Thanks again for all of your help!

Message: When in doubt, connect a mechanical gauge on there and
check it.
