Message: I've got a '98 4cyl and I recently developed a nasty problem. First off my cat is all sorts of clogged up. I took it to the dealer but they wouldn't fix it under warranty because I have an aftermarket cat-back exhaust. This weekend I parked the truck in my drive on Saturday and it sat until Monday morning. On Monday when I got in the radio had lost all of its stations and the truck hardly would turn over. I figured ok no prob I just left something on. The weird thing is that the more I tried to turn it over the easy it seemed to turn over until it finally started. All the way to work the truck would die whenever I stopped unless I gave it gas. I figured this was because the computer reset and it was having problems with the cat. It kept on doing the same things all thru the day (rough starting and stalling) So I took it for a 1/2 hour drive after work to get the battery charged from the alternator. By the end of the ride it was idling fine and I thought all was well. I shut the truck off and then started it again it started without any problems. I also checked the alternator by removing the neg battery cable while the truck was running it was fine. So I figured the whole problem was just a drained battery and a reset computer after all. This morning I tried to start it and had the same problems all over again except my radio kept its presets. Could all these problems be because of a clogged cat? The rough starting and the stalling at idle? Or is it likely that I have some other problems possibly a burnt O2 sensor from the bad cat?

Message: first of all take it back to the dealer and tell him that under Federal Law he must repair the cat, cat back aftermarket system or not.You replaced the muffler and exhauast and tail pipes, not the cat, there fore the cat must be replaced if under 80,000 miles or seven years. If he refuses, tell him it will cost him a lot more if you retain a lawyer. Then have him replace the junk that you have for a battery with a good one. A low or bad battery will cause all of your symtoms. If you shake a bad battery that has a build-up of lead in the bottom of it a little bit of vibration (like when you turn over the engine)may work enough of the lead deposits loose to allow the battery to work again for a short while. The rough idleing and stalling is probably from to low of voltage that didappears when you speed up the engine, aloowing the alternator to take over your voltage needs. If the O2 sensor is in front of the cat like on my '97 V-6 there is no way a bad cat can hurt it.
