Subject: engine reving IP: Logged
Message: I have an 01 QC 4.7 AWD and as I'm driving down the hi-way around 60-75 mph the engine will rev up 2-300 rpm's. It has done it since I bought it a year ago and was wondering if this something that is "normal"?

Message: What may be going on is your tranny is shifting
itself out of overdrive then back into it again.
That's if you have a auto.
Mine does that same thing but besides seeing the
tact raise up and down, I can hear the engine
also.
Hope that helps...

Message: mine does the same thing 03 Dakota CC 4.7. It does it at any highway speed over 60MPH. If I am of the gas completly then give it gas again is when it normally does it the F'ed up thing is, is it shifts back down imidiatly. like there was no reason for it in the first place. I think its causing excessive wear on the tranny. If anyone else has this problem or knows the reason please post.

Message: The reason there is so much gear shifting with
the 4.7 is easy. NO TORQUE! Specs may say there
is more torque than the old 5.2 (318) but after
having both engines and pulling a 26' camper I
can tell you the 5.2 is the better one. The 4.7
is a great engine package but it will never
outlast the 5.2's.
You'll soon see that the 5.9 (360) engine should
have never been dropped either. The 5.7 Hemi won't
outlast a proven cast iron work horse.

Message: What do you mean by lockup? (Doug4.7) Also I dont think its a torque problem or lack there of. What we are talking about is when the gas is reaplied after letting off completly at 60MPH or higher it downshifts and then imediatly upshifts not less than a second later. When it happens I am not even trying to acelerate just maintain.

Message: Mine does this if I have the cruise set or when I'm just going down the road at a constant speed. I'm not gunnin it, or letting off, just normal, could fall asleep, going down the road driving.

Message: Sorry I was so cryptic. What I meant was the torque converter might just be locking/unlocking. A good description (better than any one I could do) is at:
http://www.leeric.lsu.edu/bgbb/7/ecep/auto/f/f.htm
That's what I meant. By touching the gas, you can cause the computer to unlock the torque converter and the rpm will go up. When it relocks, the rpm will go down a bit. It could be normal.

Message: Thanks Doug4.7 that seems logical for milage purposes but since the tranmission is shifting out of overdrive and back to would'nt that cause uneccesary wear on the transmission?

Message: I don't think it is really shifting gears, just locking/unlocking the clutch like thing (you see my use of highly technical terms) in the same gear (overdrive).
Now it should not do it 'all' of the time, just when you are either giving it more or less gas (like running up/down hills on the freeway). Now if it is CONSTANTLY doing it (even on level ground), then there might be a problem like some sensor is confused. That might require a visit to someone who knows transmissions. However, if it is not a big deal, it might not be worth it to get it checked.
My Dak (03 QC 2WD) does it on hills and such. On level ground, it stays locked. My Taurus, on the other had, does it at any hint of a hill, AC turn on, etc. So far, neither vehicle has stranded me (due to transmission trouble), so I go blissfully on.

Message: Sounds like torque converter lock up.will happen in forth gear and above 80 klms per hour. Its very normal usually will feel 2-300 rpm difference, will unlock if brake switch seen or vehicle speed drops,or you downshift.the 45rfe trans are fully electronic and your pretty much gauranteed an engine light on if theres a problem

Message: Mine goes up and down about 600-900 rpms of change, letting off the gas and reapplying, falling asleep, etc. In fact, I just about always let completely off the gas pedal, when I shift gears on my REAL 5 SPEED, THE MANUAL ONE!!
You auto guys, gotta love em.
Look at the bright side,
if you can't pick the gear, at least you can pick your nose!

Message: I think the problem you are talking about is the throttle position sensor needs replaced. Mine did the same thing with cruise on. It would jump 200 rpms every so often. I replaced the tps and it fixed the problem.

Message: first take it to a garage and have them hook a scantool up to it run it and look at the data streem from the tps and secondly dont buy parts from autozone go to a real parts store the parts at autozone can do as much harm as good because they are made for different applications go to the dealer pay more and get what is suposto be on the truck

Message: I agree with the AutoZone statement. I bought a set of ball joints from them once and the right front lower snapped in two in just 300 miles. Luckily, I was in a Wal-Mart parking lot when it happened and not cruising down the interstate at 80mph. Napa isn't much better. Insist on name brand parts. I'm not too up on the electrical name brands. But, I can tell you to stay the hell away from Echlin (I believe that's how you spell it) at NAPA. That is the worst brand of electrical parts I've ever bought. AutoZone’s brand is better than that.
