Subject: ticking sound on acceleration
IP: Logged

Message:
Hey guys. im going batty. I have this ticking sound when I start from a stoplight. it follows in any gear im in but only when I accelerate. If Im cruising at a constant speed I dont hear it unless I press on the gas. Sounds like a bike that has a card in the spokes. It wont do it on idle parked. It only does it when i accelerate or go in reverse. Im thinking tranny but jesus this thing only has 52 000 miles on it. The tranny shifts fine so I dont get it. any of you guys come across this?
thanx
Rob

I just posted about this very same thing about a week ago (See: "Bizarre Engine noise" in V8 section). I have had many different explanations as to what it could be, but none of them have panned out. I have checked for exhaust leak, replaced injectors with Bosch Design III, asked around on forums, had my mechanic give it a thorough going over. He told me he couldn't find anything wrong with it, but said he could hear the noise. He said he thinks it's something in the valvetrain, but it's nothing that will cause damage. You're right though, it drives me absoutely freakin crazy.

You aren't experiencing ping or knock are you? Does increasing the octane of your gas help?

Can't speak for Rob, but mine is not the tensioner. Had my mechanic check that because that is one of the things I suspected. By the way Ya Man, there is no belt. It's a chain, just FYI.

Rob, sorry, but I forgot what's pushing your dak, I know it's not a 454, maybe a 360? that may help some to help you find the cure.

A belt, now thats funny. Maybe the muffler bearings need grease! J/K

I think from the way you guys are descrbing it I have the same . I have always had it from day one . I think I read somewhere on this board that it's the trany when you get on it .It's the 45rfe trany and something with the solenoids , can't remmember for sure but it's a natural thing , you can't hear it with the windows up , but down you can , or from outside the truck if somebody takes off , you can hear it . I read it was the trany and it's normal , mine always did it and have had no problems ...........

Timberwolf,

Pretty sure when I look at the front of my engine I see a belt. I was refering to the belt tensioner, I misread the reply. My bad.

Are all the v-8s supposed to have timing chain tensioners? I know there was a TSB about 'em for the 3.9 but not the 318/360. When I built my motor (318) I never put a tensioner on because it wasn't there when I took it apart. I did however put on a double roller timing set.

I know it ain't for the timing, smart @ss. I had my serpentine belt that drives the waterpump, A/C, P/S pump replaced along with the tensioner.

Is that exact enough for you? Take a friggin Midol.

This sounds like an exhaust leak!

Does it do it at a stand still if you put your foot on the brake and give it gas hard?

If so, I'd bet 25 cents its an exhaust leak!!!

Try to isolate which side of the motor its on. Try tightening the connection between the manifold and the exhaust pipe. If the bolts and nuts are rusted, be prepared to go get some high grade stainless ones for replacement. When tightening this conection, make sure you alternate between the bolts so that the clamp is evenly tightened.

the problem is it only does it when youre accelerating. i tried to do it in park jsut revving the motor and I also tried the put on the brakes and do it while in drive but it wont do it.
So im at a loss here cause I cant reproduce the sound out of the car. it definately sounds like its coming from somehwere in the engine bay but when youre driving it can be misleading

My 318 has a ticking tensioner and it has for 4 years now with no side effects. I can't hear it inside the cab though. Mine also has a serious detonation problem which I thought had to do with engine temperature or spark temperature. Replacing the thermostat and switching to colder plugs didn't help. However, I was just reading a book on building high performance chrysler engines and they mention that the plenum gaskets have a common failure that results in oil consumption, loss of power, and detonation. I'll be replacing mine soon and I'll let you know if it fixes the problem.

Hmm... Sounds like many possabilities.

An exhaust leak WILL tick under acceleration and go away once your load is low.

The electronic trannies on BOTH my 2003 Dakota and 1998 Cirrus make the slightly noticable CLICKITY sound as the selenoids engage/disengage. That is NORMAL and not noticable at all unless the window is down and you practically hang your head out the window.
The tranny clicks would only be during shifts and when you first put in a gear. It would NOT continue the entire time you accelerate.

As for the chain. We have a single chain that goes from the crank to another gear above it and then two sperate chains go from there to each of our cams. I hope our chains last at LEAST 100k miles before needing any repair. That's the ADVANTAGE of chains over a damn belt (plus belts give you a noisy sewing machine noise).

Pre ignition will occur almost at the same times as an exhaust leak. Higher octane fuel MAY reduce that.

A month ago or so my wife calls and says her car is making a really WEIRD noise form under the hood. So I meet her at a gas station. It does it whenever I first rev up the motor.
SO I'm under the hood revving up this little bast@rd V6 listening around the serpentine belt and tensioner when BAMM!!! The belt throws off the edge and fly's apart. (This was a recently replaced belt earlier this year).
I found the tensioner bearings bad. It was intermittantly BINDING up and making a LOUD clicking sound. Replacing the tensioner and ANOTHER belt fixed that problem. Maybe that's a possability with you as well.

Good luck, let us know what you find.

Mine has a very slight ticking on acceleration if I use the 87 octane gas for more than one fillup.

Get da good stuff - and use the injector cleaner every oil change.
