Subject: ignition switch problems IP: Logged
Message: Hi. I have a 2002 Dakota with an auto transmission. The switch gives some difficulity turning, think that may just be badly cut keys. I bought it used from a dealer and I only received 1 key, which might have been a copy.
The real problem is I can't get the key to turn back into the accessory position, it doesn't budge at all. I turn the wheel and moved the shift lever, makes no difference. Any ideas? Also, if you turn the key to the on position to listen to the cd player, can that cause any damage to the ignition? Might sound silly, but my first vehicles were the old points-type ignitions and you'd burn up points if you left the key in that position.

Message: No,it will just wear out the battery more so then in the reward position.either shift linkage out of adjustment,or shift interlock is out of adjustment(cant remember if dakotas have that)Or bad key,or cyliner. If you take off the column shroud and turn the key forard you can release the igntion cylinder to see if its broken, hope that helps
