Hi -

I had a stumbling problem at light throttle on the highway and I found a tip on the net about indexing the distributor. I followed the instructions and the truck's idle went all to hell.

I loosened the distributor clamp again and just gave a slight turn and the idle dropped from over 1000 to around 700-750 where it should be. I thought it was ok but it will get a stumble every few seconds and when I took it out on the road it ran bad as soon as it got up to about 3600rpm. I came home and read the Haynes some more to no avail. I disco'd the negative battery lead to reset the computer and it is running even worse now.

Of course I am about 70mi from home at a buddy's house and we're trading dumb looks. The Haynes mentiones that if if the truck has drivablility problems after installing a distributor that you seek a pro to adjust the fuel delivery. Can anyone point me to the procedure or offer some helpful advice on this?

Thanks in advance...

Wal

OK - just a quickie... I brought #1 to TDC and backprobed the distributor connector and I am showing 5vdc. The directions tell me to set on the edge of the trigger voltage. So should this be set to 5 or 0? I'm second guessing everything now, sorry.

#1 should not be on tdc-but past....Look on the harmonic balancer, keep turning there should be a "V6" or "V8" mark-you want this at "0" on the pointer on timing cover...then adjust distributor...You s\turn the distributor so its as close as possible to the point where it CHANGES between 0 and 5 volts...I think 5v is where you want it although I dont think it makes much difference

ok, I just came in to check messages. Thanks for the help!

I looked through my Haynes and it didn't show that v8 mark beyond TDC and made no mention of it. The paperwork from the net did mention it.

Anyway, I lined her up at TDC (but not past it so I'll prolly have to redo it) and I backprobed - 5vdc. I adjusted her to 0vdc at the first instance of voltage dropping off from 5vdc. The truck has a little lope at idle but it runs great, idles steady as a rock when in gear, and no more surging on the road. I did like a 20mi test. I can get in there a redo the job, but at this point I think I'm going to head home and be glad it runs as well as it does :-(

Thanks!!!

I made it home. The truck still has the RPM's climb a few hundred under light throttle but it's less abrupt then before and much smoother when it does it...odd. Maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree? TOo tired to think about it right now... . 'Night.
