Subject: Electric trailer brakes question... IP: Logged
Message: Hi,
My 2003 Dakota did not come with the tow package, but it still has the blue connector under the dash (it's even labeled "ELECTRIC BRAKES"). My question is: Where is the other end of this harness where I can wire in the trailer receptacle? When I look around under the rear of the truck, I don't see any unused connectors.
Thanks!

Message: that is the wire you need to connect to your brake controller, you will not find any unused connector under the truck, the simplest way to do it to get the Mopar wiring harness and install it, it costs around 85 bucks, if you need the electric brakes, if you simply need a 4 pin wiring connector they make ones that you just unplug and replug at the rear of the truck

The wires that come out of the blue connector appear to go through the firewall.... Where do they end?

Message: I don't think you are clear on this Brian. That is where the brake controller connects, as Bobby explained. It really doesn't matter where those end as far as hooking up your trailer harness goes; most of those are designed with a tee connecter to plug into your rear light harness.

Message: Hmmm.....
I know that's where the brake controller connects. I'm planning on using the blue connector for my brake controller. But it doesn't matter where the blue brake wire from that connector goes? That wire should connect to my trailer brakes. I should be able to splice into it somewhere, hopefully near the rear of the truck. I thought this was an easy question.... am I wrong?

Message: Do you have a blue wire or a blue connecor, on the factory set up there is a blue plug under the dash that connects to a supplied wiring harness, the part # is 56020142AB that makes the connections easy, if you have just the blue wire than you need a Mopar or similiar wireing harness that has connectors that minimize the need for wire splicing and feature a protective wrapping that guards against weather and abrasion. trailer tow wire harness kit, w/7-way connector, plugs into existing vehicle wiring connectors, includes built in running light relay.

Message: Bob is right if you buy a trailer brake kit you should be able to get an aftermarket, or even better a dodge trailer wire kits and follow the directions. I think to simplify things Dodge runs the wire your looking for to the back of the truck either way, with or without a toe package. It's just that those of us with a toe package don't have to do any work with wiring. somebody earlier told you all about those nice little 4 conductor trailer plugs, yes there great for trailers without electric brakes. Bob was steering you right with the seven concuctor plug. the great thing about those is if you pull a trailer without brakes like I do, all you have to do is use a 7 to 4 wire adapter. you cannot however make or use a 4 to 7 wire for obvious reasons.

Message: Buying the Mopar wiring kit and installing it will not allow me to use the blue connector with the blue wire under the dash.
I was hoping that someone knew exactly where that blue wire ended.
I appreciate people taking the time to answer. I really do. But replies that do not answer the question (and/or advice that does not address the question) are not really all that helpful.

Message: That blue wire is for the brake controller; doesn't your wiring kit tell you where all the connections that need to be made are ? Do you have the right kit for a 7 pin plug ?

Message: Brian,
Did you ever find an answer to your question about the tow harness & the electric brake connector & how or if they work together? I have the same situation with a 2000 Dakota. No tow package, but it has the electric brak connector under the dash & the 7pin Mopar harness I bought has a loose blue wire for a brake controller, but I'd like to use the connector if possible.
thanks,
David

Message: Well, my application is on a 2000 Grand Cherokee but there are a lot of similarities. I also have a blue wire under dash marked for electric brakes. In the Jeep case, there is a connector over the left rear wheel housing "connector C310". This connector has the blue wire in it also and adds the final length of wires out to the triler tow connector on the back of the vehicle. I would presume that this is where the Mopar trailer wiring harness plugs in. On the Jeep this connector is available under the plastic interior panel. On the daks, I would presume this connector would be on the outside of the vehicle but in a similar spot.
Hope this helps some.

Message: I have a 2000 quad with no tow package .
I bought the 7 pin trailer harness from Dodge which has a harness they say you need to run to the front with a red wire to go to the PDC & a blue wire to go into the cab (but it doesn't say what to do with it in the cab).
I also have the factory brake controller connector under the dash, but I don't know if it is useable.
So the problem/confusion is, what do I do with this connector in relation to this harness? Can the harness be wired/plugged into this connector somewhere in the engine compartment, so that I could then use the factory connector?

Message: Geez, just dig up another jar in your back yard,
trade your truck in for one that has the tow
package and have it done with.
Remember, the tow package also comes with a tranny
cooler. A must these days...
Good luck
