does your engine say hemi on it any where. if not it isnt a hemi. all a hemi is is a name for an enigine that has a few more pounds if torque. that is how i look at it

the 4.7L is not a hemi. The only specified Hemi out is the 5.7L. Hemi refers to the shape of the combustion chamber in the heads, as a "Hemispherical" shape. Many other heads are actualy a hemisphere shape, especially on 4 cylinder imports, but Dodge has patented the hemi name. i think the patent was running out, so they had to bring it out again. plus it sounds cool.

Sounds like rodeoman (posts a lot of bull) has a case of horsepower envy. Why say this is a fancy name for gas hog when it is supposed to be more efficient than the 360 ? oyotaco gave a good answer; anyone who wants this level of power has to expect to use some gas.

Don't mean to start anything,,but my understanding is that there IS NOT many 4 cylinder cars out there w/hemi heads on them. I mean most have quite a few more than just two valves per cylinder, and that would be very difficult to engineer w/hemi shaped heads. I thought/think that most 4 bangers have angled 'V' shaped heads. (I may be way off here.....)

Plus, doesn't the 4.7L have quasi-hemi shaped heads? Also,,,there are quite a few 'hemi' motors that you can still buy today - not a new car though.

yea, there are plenty of hemi crate motors out there, but not many people are up to do an engine swap.

That sounds like the intro to a philosophy seminar. Anyway, the Hemi, is an engine design that uses the hemispherical shape as the foundation for the cylinder head. This allows the valves to oppose each other, and being opposite, both may open onto the centerline of the cylinder. While LA engines have been very good regarding valve/cylinder wall shrouding, nothing beats the Hemi at totally unfettered flow. No shrouding. The valves are totally free to flow. The 4 bangers mentioned with their 4 valve heads, are not Hemi heads, but tend to be more of a "pent-roof" design....similar, but flattened in the center, not round. Actually, I believe it was the Deusenberg Brothers in the late 1920's-1930's that first stamped out the Hemi design. Chrysler picked it up in the 50's and set the automotive world on its ear. The 426 Hemi won 1,2,3 at the 1964 Daytona 500. Ford and GM were not amused. As for DC bringing it back again....there were certain things needed to get the thing to pass emissions, as well as DC wanting to regain control of the market. In the early 90's they could've made the same power in the 318/360 without going to a redesigned head. All this was to funnel all the money for performance parts back to DC. Only now is Edelbrock able to make Magnum-style intakes and heads. Why? Those engines are now history. DC is focusing on the 4.7, which looks a lot like the old 318 poly head (semi-hemi, twisted wedge), and 5.7 Hemi. The Hemi design allows for air to have a straight shot through the head. No other design does this. It was, and has never been intended to be a fuel miser, though it could be better. No, the Hemi really shines in racing venues. Only in the past couple of years has it even been allowed back into Pro-Stock racing, etc. It was originally legislated out with weight penalties, etc, because it was just too awesome to beat. It's taken all this time for conventional head designs to evolve into something good enough to compete. Oh, and, look at ANY Top Fuel and Funny Car in the NHRA. No matter what body it runs, representing GM, Ford, or Mopar, you'll see an all-aluminum engine that traces it's roots directly to the 426 Hemi.

I'd understood that the hemi predates the late 20's and was invented in 1912. It was then bought by Peugeot and won the 1913/16/19 Indy 500. It was the basis for the Offie/Miller engines that ruled the 500 for the next 50 years.

Peugeot used the hemi layout in tons of 4 cyl production cars. The cars were underpowered by allmost any measure but had good efficiency.

riddle me this. Why does the Hemi produce 345 hp in the 04 Ram and only 335 hp in the 04 Durango? The reason for my observation is the fact that I just ordered an 04 Hemi Durango on Sunday. Does it have something to do with the engine configuration under the hood?? I do know from my hunt that the K&N replacement air filter that fits the Hemi Ram will not fit the Hemi Durango's air box. So I guess they really shoe horned the Hemi in there.

DC detuned it for the durango. fuel/ spark curve, etc... it's been done before, e.g. gm 4.3 V6- 190 hp for the s10, 200hp for full size c10.

Ford had a Hemi also. They couldnt call it a "Hemi", so they give it the name "Semi-Hemi". I believe it is because the combustion chambers were not EXACTLY hemispherical like the 426.

I live in FL so I hope it's not some blanket emissions thing. I want as much HP as possible, I plan on modding it when the parts become available; as I said earlier, the Ram Hemi aftermarket parts (K&N, etc.) do not fit the Durango Hemi so it looks like I will be waiting a while, any thoughts?

Sorry 93Dakman, Ford did have a Hemi, and they called it Hemi, or rather, Boss 429 Hemi. Ring a bell? It was powerful, but pretty much remained a limited production piece (when compared to the Mopar 426). It was not called semi-hemi. The semi-hemi term does, however, refer to the same basic design also called twisted wedge, or poly, and at some point GM, Ford, and Mopar have had them.
