 Subject: Tailgate Lock

Now that I have the tonneau cover I can put things in the back of my truck but im worried about how easily someone could just open my tailgate and take whatever i have in there, even the neons I have mounted under the bedrail. The jack is back there now because of the subwoofer taking its place, along with tie downs for the quad, and other random things of that sort. Also when going skiing a tailgate lock would come in handy. Does Dodge sell something, or what is a good aftermarket tailgate lock??
By the way you need to open my tailgate to open the tonneau cover...its not one of those snap covers.

Yea, if they want it they will get it. But a lock would hopefully turn away most people because you could just go to another truck w/out one and take their stuff. Also with me being in high school we play a lot of practical jokes on each other, and securing my tailgate with a lock could prevent a lot of jokes we have thought of for the back of a truck...

I know Pace Edwards sells a nice power unit that locks and unlocks with your power door locks. It's not supposed to be terribly hard to install and can be had for around $80 I think. You can also do a search on ebay for "dakota, tailgate" and you'll find several manual ones for relatively cheap (under $29 or so).. You can also do a search on this site and find a buttload of threads that discuss this same topic in detail..

I got a hard cover too, and I'm actually looking into it. Don't know how good it is, though, probably just plactic, but maybe it will help a little.

Don't go with the pop lock. I got one for my 03' Quad Cab and it didn't work. I could pop it out without any trouble (without the key). The one that uses your power door lock system is the one I have and it works great. It mounts INSIDE your tailgate (a bit hard to mount, but very secure). Since it uses your power door lock system, no extra keys or remembering to lock the stupid thing. If you lock the truck, you lock the gate.

That power one looked nice, but I dont have power locks so thats out. I'll definitely check out ebay, that place has everything.
I was also looking at that one on Stylin' Concepts, for only $30 that thing may not be the best quality, who knows.

A little tip my brother told me when I bought his '66' MG was that if I locked it I would not only lose what the theif takes but I would also have to replace/repair the top after they slice it to get in. Just something to think about if its a soft tonneau that you have.

Dakrat, generally that's good advise. Personally I am primarily wanting to protect my tonneau more than the few odds and ends I have in it. In this case the only way they could get my tonneau would be to damage it if I have the tailgate locked, essentially making their theiving worthless. But yeah, I know a guy that never locks his car for the exact reason you stated!

After looking at all the locks, that power one definitely looks the best. But I dont have power locks, could I just not hook up the power part and use a key?
