Subject: Update: Whine in engine bay IP: Logged
Message: Well I took my 04 QC to the dealer today to have them put a new power steering pump on. Since the truck was new it had a whine coming from the engine bay. Well I am happy to report that the whine is no more. I know that others have had the same problem, so I just wanted to let them know that it can be fixed. I dont think that it would cause a problem, but it was to noisy for my liking. Also they fixed the howling brakes when backing up. They turned the rotors and installed different pads. I am glad that they could fix the problem because I realy like this truck.

Message: rhust, could you here this basically just at idle and more so after your engine was warm? My dealer changed my alternator and sure enough that was not the problem! I have a 03, 5.9 built in May/June, however, I'm sure it has the same PS pump as yours. Merry Christmas!

Message: Samtheman, I could hear it at Idle. I heard it most when I was going about 25 mph and 1500 RPM. I could also hear it more when it was cold. I have drove it about 150 miles now, and am happy to report that the noise is still not present. Brakes are much better after the fix also.

Message: Rhust, you posted - "I heard it most when I was going about 25 mph and 1500 RPM. I could also hear it more when it was cold."
I heard the same thing on my '00 4.7L Dak. I didn't think it was a big deal, just a noisy power steering pump. Two weeks ago the pump exploded spraying p/s fluid EVERYWHERE in the engine bay. The mechanic at a local shop said I was lucky it didn't start on fire because when the back of the pump blew out it sprayed quite a bit of fluid onto the headers. The repair was $525. If I had the 5.2L it would have been a bit cheaper.

Message: Good reason for anyone with a whine to have the dealer look at it, (if it is still under warranty). Glad there was no fire on yours mrman.

Message: Rhust, did it increase and decrease, matching the RPM? Mine is especially noticable when cold. I don't know if it completely goes away or just quiets enough not to be heard when warmed up. Does this sound familiar?
Also, I was under the impression that for a power steering pump to "whine" that it had to be working, as in turning the wheel, etc...
I've had my whine looked at by the local dealer and they claim that "it's probably the automatic transmission and that it's "normal". They claim that once the transmission heats up and the pump gets fluid oil that the noise subsi des. Any thoughts? Thanks!
