Message: have a 99 Dak CLUB CAB Sport V6 4x4, I keep hearing a clunking/rattling noise that I can "feel" in the steering wheel. When resting with the truck on and the steering wheel in the straight position I move it one quarter turn back and forth and I can really hear the noise. The dealer says they don't know and I really dont feel like shelling out all my X-mas bonus on my truck if I can fix it myself. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Message: I had a 97 that ate the lower ball joints after about 1200 miles. It was just as you sedcribed. My 01 2WD ate the uppers twice in about 30,000 miles. Right off the top of my head I'd say ball joints.
Take your truck to an alignment shop. On my first Dak my dealer wouldn't come clean until I had a note signed by the owner of the alignment shop that stated what the problem was. In my case a blind chipmunk could see the play in the lower ball joints.
I know this spring I'll be replacing my ball joints again. I can already hear the "turn in clunk".

Message: Had a similar clunking feeling in my 2000 and some play in the steering wheel. Had the lower steering shaft replaced when the truck had warranty and that took care of it. Fairly common problem I think..

Message: My 2008 Dakota with 4WD has an intermittent steering vibration while turning, when the vehicle is stopped, and at idle speeds and you are turning the wheel. Prior to this, I had the steering rack replaced because of a leaky seal. There was no noise prior to this. The repair shop replaced with another rack and no changes, so they replaced the lower ball joints, this did not help either. In T/S the problem, they disconnected the steering column from the rack, turned the wheel, and it checked out fine. After that was done, I think they broke the clock spring from tuning the steering wheel too far. I have an airbag light and no horn or cruise control, but I still have the intermittent steering vibration when engine is at idle speed, repair shop does not think it is the pump, but they did order a 3rd steering rack. Any other ideas?
