Message: Did you compare gas milage estimates before you purchased. I had a 3.9 in my old dak and looked at he 3.9 when I bought this 01, but the est MPG for the 4.7 was higher than for the 3.9. In the end I ended up buying the bigger V8 5.9 for the towing capacity.
These trucks are heavy, just buying the smallest engine does not mean you'll get the best milage. If the motor has to work harder to pull the weight then the milage will suffer. My 5.9 gets about the same milage as your 3.9. And I have 3 times the towing ability and power.

Message: I get about 16.5 mpg mixed driving, with a slightly lead foot with my '04, CC, 4x4, 4.7, 5spd, 3.92 dakota. It doesn't even have 1000 miles yet so I am impressed. hopefully it will go up a bit once it gets broken in a bit and I swithc to Amsoil throughout. I was expecting about 15 in mixed driving, so I am pretty happy.

Message: Y'all need to work on your trucks. I have a 91 TBI (OLD FI) and average 19.1 MPG with a light headwind. 20+ with no wind and 70 MPH!! All on my V-6 with 160000+ miles. OD/3.55 gears and 235/70 tires.
Back in the old 55 mph days. The best I saw was 26 MPG at 60 MPH.

That is believable. But your motor has 125hp. In 92 when MPFI came out, the 3.9 went to 180hp. The 5.2 V-8 went from 175 to 230. When port FI came out on engines, hp went up and mileage went down. We can't have out cake and eat it, too.

Message: I've had my 02 QC AWD 4.7 auto since Oct 01. In that time I have:
- added HO cams
- removed clutch fan
- added Volant intake tube
- switched to M1 oil
- refilled tranny and xfer case with AMSOil Univ ATF
- changed diffs to AMSOil Series 2000 gear lube
- clipped the TMS (torque mgmt) wire
- put on Extang soft tonneau cover
My milage has not changed significantly since day one. None of the above changes made any milage difference that I could not equate to the city/highway milage mix.
I average 15mpg, which varies from 13-16.5 depending on all city or all highway.
The only item above that I would give up, in other words did not gain any performance or protection, is the Volant. I gained some engine "movie" roar at WOT, but otherwise not much.
Also the TMS clip didn't gain anything that I could notice.

Message: I just baught a 2004 dodge dakota stampede, from previously owning a 1996 dodge avenger. no complaints with the dakota, since my gas milage improved by 6 mpg. they both have v8's so I expected the dakota to be way worse on gas. turns out I was wrong. I love my dakota!

Message: 20.9 this morning on my way to work (39 miles - 10% city, 30% rural hiway, 60% freeway) ....
'02 QC AWD 4.7L 3.92 LSD 265/70R16's, Peragon tonneau cover, Redline in diffs, meticulous maintenance, Magnaflow single in dual out 2.5".
Couple of observations -- I get 14 in town no matter how I drive and if I go 85 instead of 65/70 on the freeway, my mpg drops to about 16.
My '94 Ranger Splash w/ similar mods got 24-26 on the highway -- 4.0L 5 spd 4.10's 4" susp lift 33/12.5's.
Both of these trucks, IMHO, are quite acceptable with respect to gas mileage.

Message: If you get a automatic 4x4 you can expect lower millage. I'm trading my 94 in for a 96 QC,4x4 318 V8 mated to a NV-3500.
So all I have to deal with is the leaks form the transfer case and not the transmission pan.

Message: I know i will probably get flamed for this, but...
why do people whine about the gas mileage for the Dakotas? Compare the Dakota to the s10, ranger, tacoma. They are all pretty close in mileage rating. For example, even the gutless 2.7L Tacoma 4X4 only gets 18 to 21 mpg. I get 17-20 for my V6 Dakota 4x4 with more power, and the 4.7 Dak is as good on gas as the V6. So, how is dodge any worse than other truck makers? Why do people get a 4x4 and expect to get 30mpg? trucks get 15-20 mpg, no more can realistically be expected. if you want gas mileage, dont get a truck!!!
