Subject: Knock and a rattle? Help IP: Logged
Message: My problem is that i have a knocking rattling noise coming from my truck. I dont know what' it is caused from, but i do know this...This noise only happens when i'm going. At idle and even if i pop it into neutral going down the road and rev on it it is fine. First thing i did was pull over and check the oil. It was hella low, which i can't figure out cuz it was fine a little over a week ago. So i put in 2 quarts and let it run for a minute. I thought maybe it'd be alright, but sure enough when I went to go again, it was knocking. So i drove a couple miles over to a friends house and parked it. It seemed to worsen as I drove it. Has anyone experienced this, or know what it may be? Thanks for any help

Message: some additional info on my truck....
changed the oil and put in some STP Injector cleaner 1800 miles ago.
2.5L 4 banger.
Never had a problem before.
Also, the problem just kinda popped up outta nowhere. I drove to my friends house(11 miles0 and it was fine. Drove over to the hockey rink(2 miles) still fine...Started it up and left about 15 minutes later and i could hear a slight knock. Then as i drove it for a few more minutes it worsened. I checked the link above. It's mainly talking about the 5.2 and 5.9, could any of these problems relate to my 2.5? I believe my motor mounts are loose because there is a lot of movement at idle and alot more than i feel there should be when revved on. Am i right to assume this, and is it easy to tighten myself? Sorry for long postin....

Message: Motor mounts aren't too much to handle, but you'll need to be patient and it'll be messy probably. The thing that worries me is my last experience with a knockin' 4 cylinder. The oil rings went bad rather suddenly and it just sat down on the road. Towards the end (last couple miles), it started spewing smoke like a giant bug fogger. If you're losing oil, you have a point of loss somewhere (rings, valve seals...how many miles on this engine?). The knocking may be the main bearings and crank slapping due to excessive clearances or low oil pressure. Hope not, but I tend to look for the worst case....if it turns out to be less severe, all the better.

Message: I hear from a friend that the piston rings were once fried on my truck. I'm pretty sure everything was repaired, but is it a recurring problem? I have 155K on the engine, not far too much, but not young either. I've taken care of this truck like a child, but i can't say as much for the previous owner. Looks like he had his share of fun with it. I'm lookin at dropping a 318 into it, but i was gonna save that for summer...Not so sure now. Anyway, anyone else?

Message: Ok, i'm changing it from a knock and a rattle to a clank and a clunk. Good news is that i've identified the location of the problem, bad news is i still dont know what it is. The sound is coming from either the driveline or the rearend. It goes pretty steady with the turn of the wheels...i.e. the faster i go, the faster the sound. It's parked right now and it sucks. Anyone got ideas on what i should do/look for?

| Rear end is GONE! IP: Logged
Message: Well i've got the verdict. The rear end is shot. i have to replace it, so might as well do a step up. Any ideas on what i should get? Also, is there any warranty, i know my truck is old, but maybe this is covered.
