Subject: Anyone know how to get Tar off?
IP: Logged

Message:
The sides and under my truck are covered with Tar.It is just not little spots, it is THICK tar! The county road department was tarring my road the other day and they put no signs up and had no one around to warn me. I woke up that morning and had to go to town so I went out to my truck and pulled up to the edge of my driveway and noticed what they had done. Since I didn't see any signs and Saw no one around I thought It was dry enough to drive on. When I pulled out and went around a couple of curves their was the Road depart. right up the road. It had been about 20 minutes since they had came by my house and that tar was as fresh as everything. It coated my truck and it's gonna take some major work. I need something really stong and that cut THICH tar but that won't take the paint off to. Any ideas? I've got the "elbow gease" if anyone knows a product that will help.

I've heard that WD-40 is good for getting that kind of stuff off. I've used it and it works.

A few weeks ago I spent four evenings removing the tar from my '99 CC - separated it into four sections. I used two bottles of the Turtle Wax Bug & Tar stuff and one of those sponges with the nylon netting around it. Lots of soaking and scrubbing (fortunately, Dodge has gotta have the best/toughest paint around) and it all finally came off (even those damn orange spots that are left when the tar blob comes off). Followed up with two coats of Nu Finish.

Last Friday I got surprised by an unmarked road repair zone. Tar everywhere! Wiped right off, though. Definitely worth the time to keep a fresh coat of wax (or wax-like product) on the lower quarters, doors and tailgate...

Try the NEW MEGQUIAR'S EXTRA cleaner/degreaser. Doesn't take off the paint and works great. I like it a lot.( with the net wrapped sponge to scrub with )

mineral spirits is the name of the stuff that turtle wax re-labels and sells to you for a rather high price. You can buy a gallon of the stuff at you local hard ware store for around $3 and it is excactly the same thing you have already paid $3 for a pint of the Turtle wax stuff. Usually it is marked as paint thinner in the hardware store, make sure it really is mineral spirits and then go for it. Usually minreal spirits is defined as petroleum distillate, if it has toluene or some other chemical that may be harmfull to your paint STAY AWAY form it.

Go get 3M brand Tar/ Adhesive/ Wax remover. This stuff is the heat. When they undercoated my car a few spots were oversprayed, this stuff melts it like butter. Works awesome on road tar, tree sap, and almost anything else that can stick to your car. No rubbing required. The only drawback is that it's 9 bucks for a can.
I don't think I would put mineral spirits on my car either. I have used denatured alcohol with good success and its pretty cheap.

spaghets, guess what??? if you are using any of the comercial products on your truck mentioned in this thread you are already using mineral spirits. I was just telling you a cheaper way to aquire the stuff. Plus if you have a bit left over you can put it in your gas tank and use it a a fuel injection cleaner. Some injecter cleaners use alcohol some use petroleum distilates ie mineral spirits. It is the active ingrediant in Number Seven and in Turtle Wax and in 3M just a whole lot cheaper by the gallon then by the pint.

You really should not use straight mineral
spirits on the finish of your vehicle it will take
the tar off and the luster of the clear coat
aswell.I would use simple green degreaser
diluted,smartdakowner? you really think highly
of yourself dont you?

I have been doing "Touch up" (repairing chips and scratches in automotive paint) for car dealers here in phoenix for about 7 years now. There are three things that every car owner should have for removing things from their paint. The first, for removing things like tar and paint transfers is a good "Enamel Reducer" which you can find at your local automotive paint store (get the "fast" reducer). rub lightly and of course always test in a hidden spot first. If you rub really hard you can "burn" your paint, but if this happens dont freak cause it will buff out. The second thing, for removing organicly based things (bugs, tree sap, bird poop etc.)is believe it or not SPIT. I have tried many things over the years for getting the organic stuff off but have come to the conclusion that spit is the best, and cheapest thing to use. The last thing you need is a good cleaner wax. I think that the best ones to use are either "Zymol" or "Boyds". both are not only great at cleaning your paint but will leave an unbelieveably deep shine (much better than Nu Finish). I hope this helps you all out.

Around here we use diesel fuel or kerosene just spray it on or put it on with a rag and let it sit then wash it off. If you have a pressure washer theres now work to it at all but even with a hose itll come right off.

Well then what about some overspray from an aerosol paint can? I got hit with a light to medium dusting...

What can I use to remove the paint, but not my clearcoat?

I don't know what kind of paint it was.

You should try either enamel reducer or laquer thinner. Neither will remove your clearcoat. If those dont work you will have to color sand it off, which should be done by a professional. Some times overspray will buff right off. Does the paint scratch off with your fingernail?? if so then it will probably buff out.

GOOD LUCK!!

Ken I have seen simple green used on machines and watched it remove paint. I have never in all my 52 years seen mineral spirits damage laquer based paint in any way shape matter or form. Diesel fuel and kerosene are first cousins to mineral spirtits and will also do a wonderfull job on tar, but won't clean your fuel system. I obviously think higher of myself as I am obviously a higher life form. However laquer thinner will damage clear coat laquer if it is a dupont product that is already on the vehicle..

Hmmmmmmmm.. If Laquer thinner damages your clearcoat (Dupont or otherwise) then It wasnt mixed properly. Clear coats use a hardner that once it hardens, will stand up to laquer thinner just fine (Most clearcoats are enamel anyway). If you have a factory paint job, then you have nothing to worry about. I may not be the most Knowledgeable in here when it comes to performance, but I KNOW MY PAINT. I have been repairing it professionally (and successfully)for about 7 years now.

Hey noone listen to Pee Wee. You cannot just "wax" after sanding you must buff. What grit sandpaper are you using?? You should use a 2000 grit wet sanding paper (no lower than 1500).
