Today my son took my 98 Dakota for the state inspection and it failed due to "slack in inner tie rods." The guy said it was a safety concern. Could someone explain this so I will know what to expect when I take it to be repaired - so i don't get ripped off.

The steering rack has two sets of tie rods on each side that allow the rack to remain mounted rigidly to the frame yet allow the front wheels to be steered.

The outer tie rod ends are located at the end of the tie rod bolted to the knuckle. The inner tie rod ends are at the opposite end of the tie rod under the rubber boot on each side of the steering rack.

really?

ive never seen "inner tie rods" n a rack and pinion system, what you are describing is the rack that the tie rods tie into and is no way is it a "tie rod" but an integral part of the rack.

Marye,

I also have a 98 and I just changed my inner and outer tie rod ends last week. The alignment shop was going to charge me close to 300 dollars to do this job. I did it myself and all four parts were only 100 dollars. This is a fairly simple job to do yourself. The inner tie rod ends screw into the center link so all you need to remove them is a big wrench. 98's didn't have rack and pinion to my knowledge. The inner joint itself is a ball and socket joint inside a factory sealed rubber boot so when you order the new ones they come as an assembly. This job only took roughly an hour to complete. Just make sure after you are done to take it straight to the alignment shop as you toe-in settings will be incorrect.

Good luck,
Mark M.

I guess if a nameless, trolling azzhole such as yourself has never seen them, they must not exist.

Or could it be that you are an idiot and don't know what you are talking about?

Leave the board troll and let the grown ups who have a clue answer the questions.
