I am thinking of buying a used Dakota Sport truck from a friend. It's a 1997 with 150,000 miles, priced approx $4500. Does the problem affect vehicles of this vintage, or are they only a problem on 1998 and later? Does anyone have any knowledge of the reliability of a 97 Dakota Sport?

Chrysler will "study" the ball joint issue until the cost of doing nothing exceeds the cost of the fix.

Thankfully, no fatalities have been reported, but it appears it will take fatalities and multi-million dollar jury awards to persuade Chrysler spend the $100 million plus (just a guess... 500,000 vehicles X $200 per) it will cost to replace the ball joints on the affected vehicles.

To Kaiser. It does affect 1997 trucks too. I have a 97 Dakota 4X4 that I just got done doing the ball joints. The upper ball joints are the problem. They are not greasable because Dodge wanted to save 5 cents a truck. Have them looked just to be safe.

The creaking noise is the sway bar bushings. I have the same problem with my truck The dealer replaced them 3 times last winter and now its doing it again. What i do kep mine from squeaking is spray whem with some teflon based lube(tri flow is what i use) and its not nearly as bad.

jb, that sqeaking noise is coming from the poly end bushings. Pull them off and clean them with any decent cleaner; I used Simple Green. The give them a light coat inside and out with synthetic grease. Standard axle grease won't work. It has to be a synthetic. Clean the mounting surfaces on the bar and A-arm, and put everything back together. The will get rid of your squeak. For a while, anyway.

Hey Jb.
I have a big can of Tri-flow that I use on my mountain bike, so I will give the bushings a quick shot. Right now, we are above freezing, so there is no noise at all, and if I can keep out of any slush or water when it gets cold again, it SHOULD stay away.

Re."ORK-ORK" (seal clapping) That is exactly what I said to my dealer when I took it in."get rid of that herd of seals in my R/T."
He had a mechanic lie underneath the truck while we bounced on the rear fender and sure enough the bolts on the tranny were loose.(2) He tightened them up and that was the end of that. You have no idea how many cans of silicone spray I wasted trying to get the noise to stop.
Also, since the noise emanates from the center of the truck it sounds as if it is coming from the front or rear depending on where you are standing.
GOOD LUCK!

I have an 02 Quad cab...with a clunking noise when going over bumps and making tight turns... Yesterday, my dealer replaced both ball joints and an arm! The service guy said the new ball joints were not the same as those from the factory, and that these were better--but he also said he would have prefered something that could be lubed!
Of course he probably couldn't say much more and keep his job!
