Subject: Failure Modes for Thermostats IP: Logged
Message: I am troubleshooting a minor problem but want to get it corrected before I get stranded. My Dak's temp will increase to over half gauge (normal being about 1/4 gauge) sporadically regardless of engine load and air temp. There seems to be no pattern to the increase and its been happening for about 6 months. I have searched the previous posts and really dont see anything about this. I have checked to see if the serpentine belt is slipping but dont think so. The radiator is relatively new (replaced 2 years ago when the plastic cap gave out). The original thermostat and water pump are still on the engine (5.2L,100k miles - runs better now than it did new thanks to this website). Also, I have been running a performance flex fan for two years with no cooling problems even in mid-summer. Coolant is changed about every 2 years and is clean. It just seems like every so often, the thermostat is sticking. I thought most good stats fail open and cheap ones fail open or closed. Never heard of this kind of failure before and dont want to replace it unless necessary. I have read a lot of nightmares on this site about stripping thermostat cover bolt threads and using helicoils for repair. Anybody seen this or got any other ideas? Water pump impeller messed up? Intermittent blockage (air, gunk, etc.) in cooling system? OEM thermostat is bad after all?

Message: Thermostats are not hard to change, just don't hurry it. That is when you make mistakes like stripping a bolt.
I think you should replace your thermostat.
