Subject: Overhead Console Malfunction IP: Logged
Message: The overhead console that displays the MPG, elapsed drive time, compass, temperature, et cetera is malfunctioning. It's reading "--" where there should be a number. Before I take it to the dealer for the obligatory runaround, I figured I'd see if anyone else has experienced this problem and what the cure was? Thanks in advance for all replies.

Message: Per the service manual, the "--" display indicates a failure in the temperature sensor circuit or missing PCI information on the data bus. My guess, in order of probability based on your description, is that
(1) the pushbutton switch to toggle the display from Compass/Temperature to Mini-Trip
Computer has malfunctioned (if you verify that the display is actually toggling to computer from compass this is not the problem - I could not tell from your post).
(2) If "--" appears in the display for the computer and the compass, it means there is a problem with the unit pulling data from the PCI bus. Circuit board change in unit is required. However, there is a test in the service manaual for this that you can do yourself.
(3) If "--" only appears in the display for the temperature sensor, then the problem is in the temperature sensor circuit. There is an easy test in the service manual for this.
The thing that bothers me about your problem description is that the "--" message is only associated with the temperature sensor. That is, the manual does not identify the "--" message for any of the other modes.
Good luck!

Message: Thanks Joe .... great info!! Looks like my failure is of the #2 variety, as my console toggles from computer to compass/temperature, with all number values in all modes showing as "--". Thanks for the info Joe, at least now I know there is a bona fide failure and can take the DAK into the local dealer. Thanks for your help.
