MTX makes a stealth box for 2 ten inch subs that fits underneath your rear seats. Amps will fit under the pass. seat and the drivers seat. I sould know I sell these things for a living. I also own a 98 dak ext cab.
Anyone interested in buying a MTX stealth box?
I am selling mine.

Message: The speakers are actually 6-3/4". You can make 6.5" speakers fit with an adapter. I used 6.5" speakers with an adapter in my truck. Several manufacturers make the 6-3/4", but they are a little high priced for what they are. My best advice is to call up crutchfield and talk to a sales person, they can direct you to exactly what you will need. Whether you buy there or not doesn't matter, just write down the part number you want and go to your favorite stereo shop. Just a word of caution, the rear speakers are a bitch to put in. The plastic trim is very difficult to deal with. I replaced the speakers in my truck in about 3 hours. On the MTX box issue, for club cabs, the box replaces the existing tool tray and has a new spot for the jack. Crutchfield has photos on their website. I am still deciding whether to buy one or not. Anyone have one installed? Good sound or not?

IF YOU OWN A 2001 DO NOT BELIVE THEM WHEN THEY SAY THE ONE FOR 97 AND UP WILL FIT. THE PASSENGER SIDE REAR SEAT MOUNT CLOSES TO THE MIDDLE OF THE TRUCK HAS TO BE NOTCHED OUT ABOUT 2/3 OF THE WAY THROUGH. BEEN THERE DONE THAT.....

I already have a JL 12w6 witha phoenix gold zx250 sub and box and I am just going to throw that in there on the back seat. Stealth would be nice but the price just to put the box in is close to $1000 without the speaker. forget that. I just spent a butt load on the truck. 4.7 gas guzzler. anyway I just went with the head unit for now.factory speakers aren't very good but finally I have a CD player in there. we have fun in the dakotas. c-ya

Message: To answer Shawn Lattimer's question about the MTX Thunderform...... I too have one installed and I have nothing but compliments about it. It is very sturdy (about 50 pounds) and is built very well. I got mine loaded with the MTX 6000 series subs and they perform very well inside the truck. I mounted a sony xplod series amp under the front passenger seat pushing 280 watts to the subs and it does more than enough. And best of all....it's totally hidden from sight and doesn't interupt any space in the xtra cab. Definately go for it!! The cheapest I found it for was at this website WWW.NEXXON.COM and it cost me $279.00 out the door shipped to my house (sorry to the guy that paid $380 at Crutchfield.com). I just got it about 2 weeks ago and I can't wait to drive my truck just to turn up the volume.
And again as far as the other stock speakers...when putting in 6.5 inch speakers, you'll need a spacer for them to properly be installed (got mine at Best Buys when installing them yesterday).

The only thing I don't like is that the rear seats don't sit flat anymore. They are inclined a little. Of course, I don't sit there, so oh well.

Message: the Pioneer TS-A1765 and TS-A1795 speakers are 6 1/2 oversized (6 3/4) and include the Chrysler 3 hole adapter needed for the Dakota. These run about $110 at Best Buy (a bit high), but you can always find them on EBAY for about $60-65. They are quite an improvement over the stock (even Infinity). The Quad cab is 6 3/4 all the way around, I would guess the Club and Regular cab are the same for the front doors??

I am ordering the amplified version of the thunderform. From what I am hearing it just enriches the sound. And that is what I want it for. I don't want it to be way loud sooo. I will let you know how the amplified version sounds.

Message: I bought the unamplified version of thunderform, and I rewired it for stereo operation (It comes with the speakers wired in parallel.) I have to keep the subwoofer output level down so as not to drown out my mains. I'm not totally into thundering bass, I want more sound quality and as close to perfect reproduction as I can get. I also installed a variable crossover with bass boost and 3-way level adjustment, so I am still playing with that to try to tune it all in. I hooked up a 200wrms x 2 amp on the thunderform, and a 50wrms x 4 amp on my 6 1/2" 2- way mains. I found that the amps helped a lot with the front imaging problem and I can hear my highs a lot clearer. I think I'm still gonna add a set of tweeters high in the doors for some better highs, but the truck is getting there. And I have good, tight bass response for when I pop in some good heavy metal.
Overall, I have to give the thunderform two thumbs up. But I highly reccommend a separate amp for the other four speakers.

The best speakers you can put in the dakota are Boston Acoustics Rally or Pro series seperates. They come with crossovers and are designed to cut off if they are on the verge of becoming blown. They are by far the best speakers ever made if your willing to spend 200-300 dollars on a pair.

Message: Hey Shawn,
did crutchfield sell you that set up? That is exactly what they wanted to sell me. I went with a local store here and got the deck and speakers (awia and pioneer speakers) and I am going to nexxon to the the amplified version of the thunderform. I called last week and he quoted a price of 399. That is what price I got it at. I noticed it went up to 419 when he posted it actually on the site. I am actually getting it cheeper. But I am not ampen the speakers. Deck does that 45x4 rms and 22 constant from the deck. Good enough for right now.

Message: y22man,
No, I set it up myself. I already had the amps, and I had already put in some good 2-way 6.5" speakers. I have a JVC head unit that is 45Wx4, but the actual output is 13Wrms X4. It was way better than stock, but no where near what I wanted. It made a lot of distortion at high volume. My amps are kinda old, so they don't have crossovers built in, and you really need crossovers to make a sub work. Also, I wanted to take the low bass out of my mains, as they really can't handle it at high power.
I've been screwing around with (and screwing up!) stereo systems for my vehicles for several years. Every time I learn a little more and get a little better. This time I think I did a lot better. Its not a competition winning system by any means, but I'm just out to please myself.

Where did you mount the second amp to power the door speakers? I have one under the passenger side seat to power my thunderform. But under the driver's seat was to small...did you mount one there?? If so what brand and model so I can pick one up.
As far as good door speakers go, I just picked up some Cerwin-Vega 6200 series (about $140) and had them installed in the doors and finally the highs are there. I highly recommend these. They were by far the most clearest and crisp sounding of the one's I had shopped around for.

Message: Justin G
I put my four channel amp under the driver's seat. If you push the seat forward, the back of the amp sticks out a little. I am 6'2" tall, so I always have the seat all the way back. My amp is a Precision Power 50 Wrms X 4 Channel. It is about 6 or so years old, so you won't find the exact model. The amp measures about 12" x 9" x 2" tall. Most of the modern amps area little smaller, so you may actually be in better shape. I just had to play around with it to make it fit between the seat mounts and miss the bar for releasing the seat. Like I said, it sticks out into the footspace in the rear, but I have never had anyone ride back there in the year I've owned the truck. However, I'm thinking of making a plexiglass or plywood cover to cover up the amp in case sopmeone does sit there, just so they don't put their feet on the cables. You may want to check out a stereo store and see how big some of their 4-channel amps are. I really couldn't tell you what brand to go for. Almost any brand name amp is going to be as good as what you pay for. A $200 amp is worth just about $200, and an $1800 amp is worth just that. Just don't go with any of the crap brands like Power Acoustik, or Audiovox, or anything like that. What I usually do is go to one of the professional shops in my area and ask a lot of questions, then I go find the same amp cheaper somewhere online. This is how I set up a couple of my friends cars when I wasn't sure what would fit.
