Subject: Whine in engine bay IP: Logged
Message: I have a 04 QC with the 4.7 and 5 speed auto. Since day one I have had a whining sound coming from the engine. It is more noticable when it is cold. I can hear it when I am going about 25 MPH and 1500 on the tac. It sounds a little like a power steering whine, but I dont think that is what it is. Has anyone else noticied this? I am taking it to the dealership on wend so that they can take a look at the rear brakes, to see if they can fix the howling sound coming from them when I am backing up. I will also have them look at this. Anyone have a suggestion on what this might be. Thanks

Message: Sounds like the same noise I hear when I first start up my '03 w/4.7 and 5 sp auto. It goes away once the engine starts to warm up. Not to worry. The other noise is just probably your disc brakes. Remember, they drag all the time.

Message: My 03 whines when cold as well. It is only noticeable at lower speeds and changes with RPM. It almost goes away when warmed up. I had the brake noise when backing but it went away by itself. I read on here somewhere that they put softer pads in for a fix.
rhust, please let us know if the dealer fixes the whine.

Message: Probably the fan clutch - it is viscous coupled and will sound like a bearing going bad until it warms up.

Message: My 99 made spaceship noises and they went away when I threw that clutch fan in the yard and installed an electric fan setup. It whined too but I always figured it was that big serpentine belt that runs everything n never paid much attention to it.

Message: that reminds you it's a Dodge.
When it stops whining you know the engine seized up and the warranty ran out LOL

Message: What did your dealer tell you about the whine? Mine tells me that it's the transmission pump. Says that once the tranny gets to operating temperatures that the noise stops because the berrings are properly lubricated. He also claims that it's "normal" and nothing to be concerned with. All the same I have them look into it during every service so that I have a well documented record on it..
