Subject: 1998 Dakota won't run IP: Logged
Message: I have a 98 Dakota V6 that will not crank. I have checked the coil and coil is good but not getting any fire from the coil. Wires are good to the PCM. Do I have a PCM problem or should I look elswhere, maybe the camshaft position sensor?

Message: I did ched the asd relay, and 30 amp fuse as well, no problem found. Other than the obvious name, what is the ASD used for? What condition is it designed to shut down for?

Message: So...the way I figure I'm down to a PCM problem or crank sensor. The crank sensor is definately the cheaper of the two....should I try to replace that or bite the bullet and take it in for diagnostics?

Message: Yes I have, when I was testing the wiring from the coil to the pcm I disconnested the battery during testing. Still no fire after re-connecting everything. Also I'm calling around looking for parts. Should I be asking for a camshaft sensor or crank sensor? Is this two different parts or just different terminolgy for different engines?

Message: Yes, the engine will turn over but will not crank. I have checkd for fire at the plugs ..no dice. Same goes for the coil...I have ohmed out the coil and coil is fine. Have also checked the wires feeding the coil from the PCM. Both check good. One wire is also grounded, which jives with the wiring schematic. I have checked for voltage at those wires as well as I turn it over and no voltage. I am using a digital meter so it may be changing faster than my meter can read it, but I can take the coil and put 12 volts to it and get a good spark at the secondary. That's whay I'm thinking it is either the PCM or crack sensor. For whatever reason, the pcm is'nt putting out and I can't think of anything else upstream that would keep it from firing.

Message: Check for continuity on the CPS. If it shows continuity, try unplugging it, cranking the engine, then plugging it back in and cranking it. The ASD is the AutomaticShutDown relay and it kills power to the fuel pump and ignition when you shut the engine off and when the airbags deploy and if the engine stalls. It's a safety relay. Try switching another relay for the ASD relay. It could still be the problem.
If everything else checks good, make sure the rear of the three connectors on the PCM is fully seated. Unplug the PCM connectors one at a time, check the condition of the wiring and plugs and plug them back in until you feel the click.
Your PCM could be fried.

Message: Ok, Ive been tinkering with it some more, I've checked the CAM position switch, and not reading anything. I am not even getting the 5v supply to the sensor. So I checked all three wires from sensor to PCM and all check good. I've read some more and the only thing I have'nt checked is to se if the PCM itself is getting power. I did try swapping the ASD relay with one of the others that were the same and still no luck. At this point if I find I do have power to the PCM itself then can I assume it is fried or is there anything else I can check? Thanks for the suggestions all

Message: Dont forget that to when u try to reset the PCM, u not only dis-connect the battery, but u also have to turn the key switch on, and let it sit for a few seconds to drain all power from all wires, if u try that little step, maybe u can get soemthin from it, but man, good luck with all the trouble.

Message: that last post is a wives tale, an urban legend.
the accepted method for resetting the PCM is to remove battery for 2 minutes. there is no need to turn the key. doing so accomplishes nothing.
