Subject: 89 4x4 vibration

I have a 89 kota sport 4x4. The truck has 217,435 miles on it. I bought the truck from my uncle a couple months ago who couldnt seem to find this and I figured it was something simple. I have this mild to moderate vibration that occurs when I wind the engine out to around 3000rpm when accelerating in 1,2,3,4 gear. Also, there is a wicked vibration that I get driving between 40 to about 70 mph and when I let off the gas n let it coast it gets worse, if I push in the clutch it gets worse yet. It doesnt seem to be gear specific because it doesnt seem to matter if its in 3rd 4th or 5th gear. A lil above 40 it starts. I have bought a new extension housing for the transfer case(thought maybe that bushing was bad) a yoke, u joints,(front and rear shaft) rear diff bearings, wheel bearings, been up n down the shaft about 12 times, weights are still there and theres no dings, Ive rotated and inspected tires and found no missing weights and they appear to be round. Replaced the shocks. Had rotors n drums checked. Tranny mounts are tight. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Vibration problems suck, but you can do a process of elimination to help find it. Put the truck on jack stands, remove the tires and nut on the drums, spin the drive train up to speed and see if the vibration is gone. If not, remove the drums and see if this changes things. If not, remove the front yoke from the driveshaft and stick the yoke in the trans and see if the vibratin goes away. If you can't find it try taking it to a driveline shop, they specialize in wierd vibration problems.

Might be worth the time to take your driveshaft(s) down to a driveline shop and have them checked for balance. You said you replaced the yoke, u-joints, front and rear shafts, but did you have the assembly balanced?

No, I didnt have the shafts balanced yet. But I did notice that the vibration got a lil worse after I replaced the U-joints which was why I replaced the yoke, that calmed it back down a lil bit but its still pretty bad in the 40 thru 70 range on the road. Was thinkin about tryin that this weekend. Ill try the jackstand thing tho and see what happens. The truck has these cooper tires on it and the only expierience I have had with them is bad. So I wouldnt be surprised if it was the tires. But they appear to be fine. Thanks alot, any other info would be great.

has the truck been lift or lower?

u-joint broken in the past, causing bent drive shift.

did the u-joints caps fit snuggle when you replaced them,if not this will cause vib.

broken center bolt,worn-in bushings or shackles.
loose u-bolts

the front drive shift should,nt turn in 2wd

if you idle the truck in gear clutch depress, bring the rpm,s up and/or out of gear, does it still vib? harmonic balancer and/or clutch assemaly, flywheel, bad motor mounts

The caps fit snug when I pressed them in. Went up n down the shaft with a 4 ft level. Doesnt appear to be bent. Truck is at stock height. I replaced the shackle bushings and the rear leaf spring bushings. That fixed the squeak I had goin on goin over bumps. Havent looked at the motor mounts yet. I just planned on replacing them soon with the mileage on the truck I just figured the rubber prolly isnt like it used to, or should be. Never thought of the harmonic balancer tho. Ill look into that one. Thanks alot. anything else lemme know.

My neighbor in his suburban had a bad pitman arm that needed to be replaced. he was getting a bad vibration over 40mph.

Also, different tire company balances tires differently, I'd ask around to find the most experience balancers. Here in Phoenix, I've been to about 6 different places before i found one that could balance tires.

3 different discount tires. (only one got rid of my vibration)

2 pepboys, (one was just ok)

new set of BF Allterain, discount told me i was suppose to have a vibration. Called BF, they told me that was a full of crap story. They shouldn't vibrate. The 3rd discount tire place, fixed the problem.

So, it depends on the experience of the tire balancer and when their balancing equipment was calibrated last.

Drove the truck to the store a lil bit ago. I never noticed it before but when I rev the truck with the clutch pedal pressed while sitting still, it vibrates. It almost seems like theres two different vibrations tho. The one while Im driving is much rougher then the vibration I get when I rev the engine. Is it possible that they could be related somehow. Im swappin the engine mounts out this weekend if time allows it. I also noticed a minor thud that occurs now n then while Im goin up thru the gears. Not really a clunk, just a little thud. Almost makes me think its a bad engine mount. But could that cause the wicked vibrations I get when driving down the road.

I should also note that the Driving vibration, you dont just feel it in the steering wheel. Its worse on the gearshifter and it feels like the whole truck is shaking. thanks again
