I've got a 01 4.7 4x4 with 78,000. Live in the chicago area and since it's been cold the last 2 weeks, i get unstable idle until the engine has ran awhile. I will be driving 25-30 and as soon as I take my foot off the gas, the idle drops to 250 and then comes back up. The lights also dim when this happens until the idle is back up. It has only completely died once. After a hour ride on the expressway the truck drives great for the remainder of the day. Tonight I cleaned the throttle body. Seemed very greasy. Seems to help a little but the idle still drops while coasting and then bounces back up. Currently the truck is idling at 500 to 600 stopped. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Brad

P.S. Have also noticed a ticking coming the drivers side under the hood.

How old are your spark plugs? They should be changed at least every 36K miles. I think your best clue was the carbon buildup in the throttle body. Get some carb/injector spray cleaner, and spray down the TB throat. Take a clean rag, like t-shirt material, and swab the inside as far as you can reach. Also try a bottle of STP injector cleaner (black bottle) in the gas tank.

UPDATE: After cleaning the TB last night seemed to run a bit better this morning, but not quite right. Little less fluctuation in the idle. The funny thing is it only does it first thing in the morning. After the intial running (60 min) its fine all day. Ran across a 3M complete Profesional injector cleaning kit. Ran that through. Seems to be running like a dream. Idle as smooth as silk with NO fluctuation what so ever. Also pulled the battery to reset computer. I guess the true test will be in the morning. Thanks again.

Brad
