A lot of people have told me my mom is good at polishing knobs. I'll ask her how she does it and get back to you.

Polishing metal is the same general process regardless of the metal type. But stainless is pretty hard, so it takes a lot more effort. If the scratches are not too deep, just try a polishing wheel and some medium rouge. If the scratches are deep you'll need to sand them first, then polish. Be warned, it's very time consuming.

rouge won't work on stainless, it is designed for glass which believe it or not is softer then steel. use tripoli. Remember I own a machine shop!

Rouge will work i make my own belt buckles and that is what i use to polish them to a mirror finish. I tend to start with a 120 grit sanding disk on a grinder and then follow up with a 400 grit sanding disk on a D.A. and then on a buffing wheel with rouge and in total it can be done in about an hour.
