Subject: a real puzzler IP: Logged
Message: Guys,
My friend has a real puzzler. At idle in Park, or any gear, not neutral, her car has a distinct humming noise and a vibration ealsily felt through the floor. Like I said, if you put it in neutral it goes away. The vibration also stops once the brake is released and you start to drive. Any ideas out there?

Message: I wouldn't really be able to tell. It could be from somthing like a transmision with bad mounts, or even motor mounts.

Message: We do have truck with some clearence under the vehicle. So I would say to look under the truck with it in gear (not moving...LOL) and try to find out exactly where it is coming from. You can even try using a soled bar of some kind like a stethescope. Put your ear to it and the other end on an object your listening to. good luck

Message: open the hood too with it running. standing on the brake, put it in gear and watch how much the engine moves (twists). if it's a lot, it may be bad mounts and it may simply be hitting something. or could be similar situation with the tranny. the engines idling torque is twisting things with the brake on. release the brake or put it neutral and it's no longer pushing on anything and it relaxes

Message: The work truck I drive is a Ranger (5-speed) with a dead A/C. When I turn it on anyway to try to get some defrost, it hums and vibrates. Maybe in neutral and with gas, the rpm is high enough to compensate for this somehow. This seems to be the case in the Ranger. Nobody's mentioned the A/C yet - could just be my ignorance.
