Subject: Upper Ball Joints - Separation Accidents
IP: Logged

Message:
I'm posting here to find how many people have had or heard of premature wear on their upper ball joints. Has this happened while driving resulting in an accident, injury, or wheel separation? If you have anything on this please state your year, milage, and tell me what happened. Thanks

'99 Dak Sport 4x4

All 4 ball joints, left and right tie rod ends (inner and outer) worn out at 53k.

Getting them replaced tomorrow for precautionary measures and so my brand new tires don't get chewed up. Also hoping a recall is on its way so I can get refunded.

I have a 1998 R/T and I just had all the bushings replaced and the rest of the suspension work done. My upper and lower ball joints were destroied too... I bought the complete P-S-T Poligraphite performance front end kit. My truck was very dangerous because of the body roll in curves, braking and aceleration. It only has 23K now and I prefer to use only on weekends.

i have a dakota 2000 4.7 2wd 3.92 lsd. At 15000 miles, had replaced upper lower c arms and ball joints{destroied} on both sides. At 60000 miles, replaced upper and lower c arms and ball joint on passenger side. Also, replaced seased AC,clutch fan and belt.At 70000 replaced outter left tyerod and scheduled replacement for differential. Now,with 71000 the left side is allready bad, but, not bad enough for the technician to "duplicate" the problem in a short ride on a god road. I still have 3000 miles before service contractors expires[7 years 75000]All this is dealer documented. Also had case oppened with crysler consumer service and joined at class act at: http;/www.ademilow.com/cases/consumer-joinphp.

To all Dodge Dakota/Durango Owners:

I spoke with Mark about this thread. He is attempting to perform a
FORMAL Survey and he was very specific in his question:

"Has this happened while driving resulting in an accident, injury, or wheel separation?

Remember to "... please state your year, milage, and tell (us) what happened ..."

... and photographs would be greatly appreciated.

I will be working with Mark to create a file of all responses received.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

No, he wasn't clear. The original comment was:

"I'm posting here to find how many people have had or heard of premature wear on their upper ball joints."

He then asked if it happened while driving.

Just had my 01 dak in yesterday for that wiring recall and had them check the ball joints. One upper is shot and that is all they intend to replace. But the ball joints that they had in stock and at their distribution centers have been recalled by DC so they told me that it would not be a safety issue while I'm waiting for it to come in. The truck is a 01 quad cab 4x4 with 21k miles, mostly in town... I don't trail riding or mudding with it. I asked about getting all 4 replaced and they said it would cost me 700 dollars.

I had a 99 standard cab 2 wheel drive sport, replaced all 4 at about 30,000 miles cuz the upper passenger side was shot when I went for inspection they failed it. Told the guy he was full of sh!t and took it somewhere else due to disbelief, The guy at the second shop said the same thing so I took it home n checked it out, It was shot. Used aftermarket moog parts, the dealer wouldnt cover it since I was the second owner and I didnt want to buy the whole control arm. Worked fine right up to about 85,000 when it was totalled. But both front wheels stayed on. Cant say that much for the rest of the truck. My dad has a 98 sport, his went at about 43,000. I did the same thing to his and there still fine at 109,000.

99' Dak 4x4. Front end makes clunking noise when I go over bumps. I am going to check upper ball joints. At 76,000 miles my warranty has run out.
I will wrench them myself. Dealer is incompetent anyways. I have had a cracked cylinder head(took them 3 times to fix)failed at 30,000 mi., fuel pump failed at 40,000 which standed me up in northern cal. The dealer up there fixed it under warranty. And they found that the cylinder head gasket was leaking AGAIN. They fixed it and said
the dealer I usually take it to would be reprimanded. All i got was a pain in the arse.
I will replace uppers with Moog ball joints w/zerk
fittings.
