Subject: Engine Rattle IP: Logged
Message: I've got a 93 Dakota, 3.9, auto, with approx 125,000 miles. For several years, the engine has produced a "rattling" noise while idling. I always thought it was a sloppy timing belt until the other day, I was under the truck while it was idling, and the noise seemed to be coming from inside the oil pan. Since it isn't a rhythmatic knock like a rod bearing, I'm wondering if it might be the oil pump.
Does anyone have any experience or knowledge they can shed on this? If it is the pump, how big a job is it on that vehicle to drop the pan and repair/replace it?

Message: Check your heat shield on the right side of the engine. I have a 2001 3.9L with the same prob, and all it ended up being was the heat shield rattling against an AC line. Simply bend it back down with a stick or something like that. The shield is by the exhaust manifold between the engine and battery. Good luck.
