went to see one at the dealer sat. Looks kinda like a van, if the front bumber on that thing stuck out any farther you could sleep on it. I wasnt impressed by it at all. Hope the new Dakota doesnt look like that.

When I first set my eyes on the 04 Dorango I
really thought I was looking at a Minivan untill
I seen the name. I also noticed the starting
prices are out of this world for me! By the time
you add any V8 you are in the 30's. No thanks!
I'll have to raise the hood on one also. From
what I read in a thread on this site, the engine
sets way back and hard to reach anything.
The auto makers is gonna price themselves out of
the market for us *normal* buyers. Price keeps
going up and quality down. Not very smart in my
book. But then again, I'm just a "pee-on".

I own a '98 Durango, and was looking forward to 'upgrading' to a Dakota when its replacement came out. After seeing the 2004 Duravan in person at the Phoenix auto show this past weekend, yike, it looks like I'll be driving my D into the ground (80,000 miles, that could be soon!).

I've been a 'Dodge guy' for 12 years, but I fear the Hof Brau takeover has turned the brand into a second tier dumping ground for Mercedes used parts and bad ideas. If you find the '04 Duravan's exterior lacking in everything but ugly, wait until you see the interior. Dodge is to interior innovation what England is to creative fine cuisine. Upgrading to side curtain airbags is a must, they'll make for great pillows when the interior lulls you to sleep at the wheel.

Ford, which I swore I would never buy again, is light years ahead of Dodge in cabin design. The new F-150 was quite impressive inside...too bad they forgot to put an engine in the thing. They didn't have a Titan at the show, but they did have an Armada, and it was suprisingly impressive. Deceptively large, with every bell and whistle you can think of inside, like riding in First Class. I walked up that thing hating it, walked away considering a purchase.

Contrast to the Ram's cockpit, which is a step above milk crates and duct tape, and you start to wonder if Dodge hasn't fallen behind, or off the map altogether. If these were $17,000 hay haulers, nobody would care that the inside has all the aesthetic detail of a holding cell. But these are $40,000 machines once you load on the extras, a price point that begs for something more than "Itz a seet, vat more du yu vant?".

I hope the new Dakota is a Hemified monster worthy of the price tag they'll surely slap on it to finance the next German field trip to Poland, but the current Durango and Ram seem to indicate that the German buyout of Chrysler was the worst cross the pond atrocity since they bombed Pearl Harbor.

I raced a Hemi Durango yesterday... whipped its butt by no less than 4 car lengths at 60 mph. Its ugly, it looks like a trailblazer from the rear, a mini-van from the side, and the front end looks like the back end of a horse. Pity that the 05 dakotas will look similar.
