Subject: Can I switch my 6 bolt to a 5 bolt? IP: Logged
Message: Hello,
I have a 4x4 98 Dakota SLT, I was wondering if it was possible to somehow change my 6 lug pattern to a 5 lug pattern? I have Proto-type rims that were on my wrangler that i want to put on my Dakota. Is there some sort of kit I can buy, or am i just sh*t out of luck? Please respond with any suggestions?

Message: change the suspension components and you can

Message: I have seen those adaptors to switch it but they are expencive. Like $80.00 a piece! Anyone have any other suggestions or site where i can get like a kit to do it rather than buying them each seperatly?
I need to get them soon and cash is kind of tight with Christmas right around the corner!
Thanks

Message: i dont think there is gonna be a kit to do it. The only dakota that you could change the pattern was with the genII dakota.. those all you had to do was get the rotors from a genI dakota.

Message: You can swap out the axle shafts for the rear, but the front? No info on that.

Message: you wouldnt be able to swap out the axle shafts... you would have to have em made. The genIII dakota doesnt share the same axles with the previous Dakotas.

Message: In the rear, you would need custom axles and a re-drilled drums. In the front, you can have your rotors re-drilled to a different bolt pattern. Check out Moser Engineering.

Message: redrilling the rotors on the GenIII dakota wont do anything other than have a five lug hole pattern. Our lugs go out of the hub assembly unlike the previous dakotas.

Message: Okay but wouldn't that then give a 5 on 4.5 pattern instead of 6 on 4.5? His Wrangler rims are 5 on 4.5.

Message: you can redrill the rotor but then all you will have is a rotor that wont fit on to the hub assembly
you gotta remember that on the GenIII's its the hub is built into the spindle

Message: Actually, you can use the older shafts in the '97 up 8 1/4 if the appropriate c-clips, etc are carried over. While this isn't the strongest setup, it can be a really cheap way to get the 5-bolt axle shafts, and they're not THAT weak. Naturally, a custom-cut set from Moser or Strange would be the best of both worlds.

Message: you cant use them because the older 8 1/4" rears use a 27 spline axle and the newer ones use 29 spline axles.

Message: Was working on my 2001 mustang cobra and had
to replace the front wheel bearings. It
comes as an assembly and uses the same set49
bearings as the 97-2004 dakota. I just have
to see if the ABS ring has clearance. Is so
it's a bolt on swap. Now I just have to find
the right 11" rotor with proper backspacing
(My cobra has 13" rotors & wrong backspace).
Has anyone tried this yet?

Message: Dusting off an old thread! I don't have much
experience around 5-bolt swaps on the Gen III
Dakotas or on Mustangs, sorry.
