I am considering purchasing a 2000 Dakota 4x4 SLT 4.7 with over 100k. Does anyone out there have any experience with a higher mileage 2000+ 4x4 Dakota with either v8?

There are a few out there, but the vehicle is not known for longevity (I know I'm going to get plenty of responses that say "mine lasted me for 18 million miles.."). I would say that there is a significant amount who experience major mechanical problems before 100k miles.

The 4.7s haven't been out for very long yet so I don't think its fair to say "the vehicle is not known for longevity". All vehicles will need some repair after a while.

2000 4.7 4x4 70,000 miles. Just replaced original battery. That's it. No mechanical issues.

Pat Goss of MotorWeek talked about the Dodge 4.7 on his Washington DC radio show this past weekend. Pat is well-known for not being in any manufacturers pocket and will call a-terd-a-terd.

He had nothing but praise about the 4.7.

I recently purchased my first Dodge product, and after reading all of the negative posts on this site, was second guessing my decision. The thing to remember is that the majority of the posts on this site have to do with people looking for solutions to problems that they have. People without problems are not posting. I tend to seek-out people with Dak's in parking lots, etc, and ask them about their first-hand experience. To-date the reviews have been good.

Good luck!

I think it is fair to say that the vehicle doesn't have a reputation for longevity, whether it be because it hasn't been in existence long enough or because it has developed a reputation that contradicts the statement. The 4.7 is a good engine, so it may last quite a while if it has been taken care of. It is the rest of the truck to be concerned about. I think that unless the vehicle has a strong reputation for reliability and you KNOW that it has been taken care of, you shouldn't buy one with over 100k miles. If you want an unbiased opinion on reliability, check Consumer Reports. Also, don't confuse "initial quality" with reliability. The term "initial quality" refers to how well the truck stands up after 3 months.

2000 QC SLT 4.7 auto, purchased new in Feb 00, 90000 miles and still running as new, no squeeks or rattles, none. Only repairs made are powersteering pump and a coil pack. Other than the gas mileage I am totaly satisfied with this truck. goin to the fullsize QC soon, just havent decided if I want the 5.7 or Cummins.

Bought my 00 4.7 2WD Dak with 60K and it's at 110K now. It's a great truck outside the crappy ball joints and front brakes, but I would rather have these minor problems than engine, transmission or electrical problems.

I put new ball joints and brakes ont the truck when after I bought and it's ready for new brakes again, not bad for the mileage on the truck.

Get the 4.7, you'll like the gas mileage over the other V8's and it still has pretty good power. Pulls my 3000# boat to the lake without problems
