Subject: Tips on front axleshaft replacement. IP: Logged
Message: I just replaced the driver's side axle shaft on my '97 Dakota 4wd today. Two minor problems cropped up that I would like to point out. The spindle nut was impossible to remove even using an impact wrench and also a 6' cheater bar. A little heat directly to the nut from a propane torch solved the problem. It seems someone used red(permanent) loctite on the nut. I just had the ball joints replaced so maybe the mechanic used the loctite even though it's not helping anything(there is a cotter pin that retains the nut should it come loose). Another problem that cropped up was that I couldn't get enough clearance to lower the shaft down below the control arm. To solve this I simply placed a jack underneath the control arm and jacked it completely up. This allowed just enough room to slide the axleshaft down below. Everything else went like a piece of cake. Hopefully this will help make someone's job easier.
