Subject: 5 spd tranny problem IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2000 Dakota Sport, 4 cyl and 5 spd transmission. While driving I went into 2nd gear and the transmission became disengaged. No matter what gear I try, the trans will attempt to move, but will then disengage with a high pitched grinding sound like the gears are barely touching. Does anyone know what the problem is? I need help bad!!!!!

Message: My guess is that it's the clutch. The stock factory clutches are notorious for having the center section break out of them and do exactly as you have described. Does it make the same sound in all gears both forward and reverse?

Message: Yes it does make the same sound in either forward or reverse. I was hoping it was the clutch and not the trans. Thank you very much for the reply. Do you happen to know what the repair cost (rough estimate) would be?

Message: Unfortunately I'd have no clue. I've never had anything worked on by anybody, but the parts should probably run in the $200-$250 range?
Sorry I couldn't be more help.
