I have a stock 01 Dakota Quad,35K, with 4.7v and auto transmission. Recently when you put it in R it backs up a few feet then acts like it's in N, if you go to any gear and return to R it's fine. My mechanic first adjusted the linkage, then replaced a solinoid, then reprogramed it, now he says it's internal and overhaul time. The fluid is as clean as the first day it was put in, there must be another answer?

Is your mechanic a "Dodge" mechanic who is trained to work on RFE trannys? If not take it to one and have it properly looked at.

Actually it has been seen by two dodge techs, an independant and AMCO, none of them have "hands on" experience with this transmission, they keep saying "oh that's one of those new ones". The hazards of living in the sticks I guess.

You may have to bite the bullet and take it to a dealer. You may need an overhaul in the end but I'm doubtful with only 35k. These trannys have been pretty durable. You may only need a software update and you probably still have warranty unless the other mechanics voided it somehow.

No warrenty- marked title at 3K, hit over rear wheel, then repaired. Not related to transmission at all, but they don't honor a warrenty on a marked tittle. The truck has been 100% until this started happening.

It sounds like your torque converter is draining out. Does it happen after it's been sitting overnight, or a few hours? Mine (2000) needs to be put in nuetral for a few moments after I first start it in the morning in order to get the transmission fluid to refill the converter. It will not refill in Park.

Accident or not, if they cannot prove that it was related to the accident, it's still covered 3/36. I work at a diamler dealership and deal with this all the time.

I don't know how much planer I can say, "NO WARRENTY". It's disapointing that of all these responses, only 1 has offered a possible solution to the PROBLEM, unfortunatly my truck doesn't have that set of symptoms!

Haven't seen the layout on the new ones, but it sounds like a valve body malfunction.

Hi i've been lookin around this site, because i'm planning on getting a Dakota for my next vehicle. This happens on my Intrepid, it's actually in the shop right now getting fixed. This is a common problem with the Intrepids only it's just for drive not reverse, anyway a few of the problems reported at DodgeIntrepid.net (which is where i'm from) have been caused my solenoids and input sensors. might wanna check your sensors.

I bought a used 93 van that had 55k miles on it and has done the same thing for the last 4 years. like MOMO said earlier I put it in neutral and let the van idle for a minute while the engine warms up and it works fine after that. If the engine is already warm I let it idle for about 5 seconds and then pick a gear. Ive read on other boards about one way valves the install in the trans lines to stop this. small price to pay if you cant get it done under warranty. good luck

I heard that the tranny fluid will not flow unless in Neutral (or in gear)
I have remote starter on my truck (and LOVE it by the way!) but the whole tranny thing just made me worry a little.......

just another thing to bitch about this truck!

You heard this? Really. The fact is, they flow more in neutral, but the very nature of the transmission design requires some degree of flow at all times. Engine runs, crank is turning. This turns the transmission pump, which PUMPS the fluid. If it's running, it's flowing.

How is the transmission shifting into 3rd (quality wise) and is their any other problems?
It could be a multitude of different things. The easiest quick fix to try would be replacing the cooler line check valve. This valve prevents cooler drain back leading to a empty torque convertor. When you first put the trans in gear, you would have to wait for the convertor to refill, that it would put pressure to the clutches allowing you to move.

I occasionally get a hard shift going into 3rd when I am light on the gas around 20-25mph with my 545rfe. Occurs mainly when the tranny is up to operating temperature. Other times it's smooth.

Knucklehead, I was getting a hard up shift when accelerating then slowing down(like when I pulled into traffic). It really slammed the drive train too, wasn`t subtle. Dealer flashed for harsh up-shift, been fine since.

I know this doesn`t help you Browner but good luck.
